I read this book and loved it so much that I downloaded the audio edition and it was awesome! If you are a Tina Fey fan the audio edition will not disappoint!
I love Tina Fey's work on SNL. I really expected to love this book. Many of the reviewers talked about laughing out loud. That rarely happened to me while reading this. The book is sometimes funny and I enjoyed some of the background stories. But I found the author somewhat self-absorbed. I don't know what I was expecting, but I came away from this book liking Tina Fey a little bit less.
I thought there were very few funny moments. I like Tina Fey, but not a fan of her narration. After reading all of the high praise for this book, I was disappointed.
First: if you love 30 rock, you will love this book.
If you don't, you will probably like it anyways. Both the book itself and Tina's fantastic narration bring out her subtle humor exceptionally well.
I was surprised at how brutally honest many of her stories are, and some even offer interesting lessons to consider in one's own life. I think it was very brave for her to tell so many harrowing stories from her life, but I'm thankful she did so because it certainly made for a wonderful book.
This book is wonderful on every level - humor - wildly funny without really ever being unfairly mean. Insight - spot on. And Fey understands the limits of her insights' relevance - and does not attempt or pretend to have any universal insight- AMEN! The book is very sweet and sometimes poignant without being preachy, maudlin or disingenuous.
I love 30 Rock. I love Tina's sense of humor. This book did not disappoint.... At times, her life mirrors 30 Rock and her sense of humor reflects the show, but overall, it was enjoyable.
Tina also has some interesting points on life, how to relate to people and how to manage effectively. I would recommend this audiobook to my friends.
Peeved in Phoenix
I really wanted to love this book; I like Tina Fey (and still do) but this was a lot of nothing about nothing. Ms. Fey is an adequate narrator so I had no issues there, but her life is rather unremarkable and I found myself wondering why she decided to write about it. Well, I got about halfway through, abandoned the effort and went on to something better. Not awful just not really good either.
I bought this book thinking it would be good for my wife and I to enjoy on our summer vacation road trip. I found very little of this book inspiring or funny. I think from a womens perspective that it might have been funnier therefore Im giving it two stars instead of just one.
I don't recommend this book for men to listen . The book is all about what it takes for you to be a women to overcome sexism in the workplace. I don't see myself as a sexist and believe I view women as equals in a professional workplace but I found her feminist values and instructions obnoxious and arrogant.
If your like me and looking for a good book to listen to with your Significant others try something different.
This was a very funny book, and as a 30 Rock fan it was tons of fun to hear about how she came to be in the TV business and some of what went on behind the scenes as 30 Rock came into existence. So long as you're a Tina Fey fan, you'll enjoy this regardless what gender you are. I didn't feel like it was geared towards women hardly at all.
