I recently listened to Cold Wind and really enjoyed it. Great story and great characters. So I went to the first in the series - Open Season. Another great listen. Aside from the great book, they picked the perfect narrator. On to the next ...
CJ has the uncanny and truly brilliant ability to weave what would seem like valid causes; aka agendas, to be convincingly mixed like poison cocktails within the minds of both the evil and the utterly morally confused.
I greatly appreciate the fairness and clarity brought to bear in his stories. Keep them coming CJ! I'm on your 4th book as of tonight. Love everything about them! :-)
Learning about the characters and their back ground
When Mary Beth got shot
On my seats edge. I didn't want to turn it off.
Old Broad with Keyboard
Yes. I already have.
The last couple of chapters were a real surprise. Without telling, the action was good, the surprise was great & it made me go out & buy the next one in the series.
there's something just a little dull about the beginning of the book & his narration is part of it.
It was a slow starter. I almost gave up on it but, I was working on something that I couldn't turn off so I hung in there. Then it changed into an action thriller. I enjoyed the last two thirds of the book immensely & would recommend it - you just have to get past the dull beginning.
I really enjoy the "wilderness law enforcement" genre. My favorite is Walt Longmire (Craig Johnson.) I also enjoyed the early books in the Cork O'Connor series. But Joe Pickett has become a wonderful discovery.
This first offering in the series introduces us to a brave, interesting, dedicated but all too human Wyoming game warden. We become familiar with his struggle to remain an honest man, provide for his growing family at poverty wages and successfully do the work he loves.
Also brought into her own is Mary Beth, Joe's wife, and his daughter, Sheridan. Her behavior at seven years old strained my credulity a bit, but not so much as to spoil anything.
The murder mystery is well-crafted and intriguing and C. J. Box brings the Wyoming landscape into sharp focus as a character unto itself.
David Chandler's narration is outstanding and his work has definitely helped bring these characters and this story to life.
Highly recommend and I'm now moving on to the second book, Savage Run.
good storyline, good characters, good suspense, good environmental information , good surprises and it all comes together nicely.
