This book was timeless and mysterious. I was hooked from chapter 2. When I finished I wanted a sequel, but could not find it. Hopefully the author will keep the story going, and going! I love the characters and the plot. I am waiting to find out where Dianna and Mathew takes us next!!
Deborah Harkness has taken the vampire genre to a whole new level. The settings are described in rich detail, evoking locations from Oxford, England to Medieval France to upstate New York. Meticulously researched, it combines history and science to explain the supernatural. Modern science is woven seemlessly into the plot contrasting with the rich alchemical symbolism. As a love story, it is compelling. Two strong characters who slowly come to acknowledge their feelings for each other. Bring on volume two!
This is the first time I have taken the time to write a review about a book I have listed too. I loved this book! Loved the story and the narration both. Can't wait to hear more.
The narration was terrific. The narrator was able to do so in a way that made all the characters sound in your head the way you imagined them. The character development was superb. Each character feels like you know them intimately. This is a great read and I am sorry about only one thing...it had to end!
A wonderfully old fashioned novel with a very contemporary theme. A woman discovers her power and begins to learn how to use it. Yes, it's all dressed up charmingly with witches, vampires, castles, romance, and a sprinkling of history - and, like the Harry Potter books, uses the timeless allegory of the orphaned child - but I still found a great deal of resonance with the ongoing themes of my own very prosaic life.
Escapist without being dumb...too many digressions sometimes but I was sad when it ended.
Wonderful story - when is the next one coming? I loved the character development.

I enjoyed this book, but nowhere in the description does it say it is the first book of a trilogy, with parts 2 and 3 yet to be written. Now that I'm hooked, the wait is a disappointment. Let the wait begin....
It was an interesting take on Vampires, Witches and Demons, up to date and not grusom. I thought the story was very slow getting started and seemed to end when it really got interesting. I would like to see the follow up story.
Enjoyable read! My only disappointment is that it ended - and no sequel is on the market yet. So read it twice in two weeks. Anxiously await the sequel and another dose of Matthew Clairmont!
Liked it so much, wrote my first review.
A Discovery of Witches was an intriguing read. Deborah Harkness provided a stimulating and innovative plot, interesting details, characters I wanted to get to know and soon fell for, and intimacy that does not rely on detailed descriptions of sex scenes. It is apparent that Harkness has a strong background in history although I did feel some aspects were not friendly to someone who is not strong in history, specifically alchemy. There were certain scenes that did not quite fit but I am hoping will make more sense in the sequels (it’s supposed to be a trilogy). As long as Harkness continues the various aspects of her story and closes them within the trilogy I would maintain high ratings.
