It was fun imagining Roman era Britain although highly tinged w/ 21st century ideals. The story is a fun dime-store detective story which plays well enough.
Yes I would recommend this book. It is always delightful not to know how a story will end and the author didn't give it away.
The funeral was memorable when it was obvious that so few people cared about the victims.
The fact that the main character's wife would never have a child due to her own past and he decided he lover her enough to stay with her

This entire series is fantastic. The narrator and the author have given us a treat. The history and the great characters and the details of daily life are all here. Hope there's more coming!
I like historical mysteries and this one was set a little further back in history than I normally like but Ruth Downie has written a fantastic series of the Roman empire.
The narrator does a great job with the voices, for the most part, but I don't like the way he does the main woman character.
The characters are well developed and real; even the secondary characters are complete and very human with good sides and flaws.
I listened to this book because it was on sale. It was a good deal! I like historical mystery fiction like brother cadfael and the master shardlake series. This fits right in with that style. I will look forward to listening to other books in the series as time permits.
This series is unique mostly because the characters and the story lines are actually getting better. I'm enjoying the author's ability to tell an interesting story and give me an intimate view of this early AD world. Nice work.
Wonderful book --somewhat confusing in parts but the characters are fascinating. Makes you feel as if you were really there
Retired "Okie" librarian & happy to have found Audible for good stories & staying in touch with new authors & books.
An interesting & well written historical mystery set in Roman Britain times in a village near St. Albans. Clean, educational, & interesting I give it a definite GP rating with 4+ stars! I will be reading another Ruth Downie mystery. The title means something along the lines of "buyer beware". It is interesting how Downie ties this concept into the plot. Roso is my favorite character as he shows the reader the perks & responsibilities of being a male Roman citizen and officer. Simon Vance is an excellent narrator.
