Let me first say the narrators totally make this book. I really did not like the original narrator for this series but I was able to perserve. Ms. Ross put just enough southern accent in the lead without being overbearing and Mr. Gigante can purr in my ear anytime. Normally after so much sexual tension in a book it's gratifying to have the two antagonists finally put their petty differences aside and get down to business. This book left me drifting between loving it and feeling slightly cheated. After the explosive cliffhanger of Dreamfever, I so devasted by Barrens' death I was dying to know what Ms. Moning would do to make the story still as hot and interesting. The story was just as riveting as always but it just wrapped up so neat and tidy that I was left feeling... well, cheated. I still give five stars because I rarely find an audiobook I can get just as abosrbed in as a written text and the plot twists kept me guessing. I have listened to or read every Moning book and will continue to do so without hesitation. I'm waiting for my next highlander or another Jericho ;-)~
I am a fan of Karen Moning after reading her Highlander series. However, her fae series just falls short. I am disappointed as she knows how tell a great story with her ability to mix conversation with action and always makes me want to run into one of her great Scots.
After listening to all five books the first narrator's male voices were painful so acquiring Phil Gigante is what saved it for me. Most of the time I wanted to shove a sock down Mac's throat. I'm not sure if Mac's constant redundant internal mental whining was to stretch the series out but it certainly brought the quality of this series down.
Although this was not my favorite there are things that separately where fantastic. Jericho Barron's character is one of her best. I consistantly waited for him to show up on the page and at my house!. And, well...Mr Gigante...seriously I want you for my birthday. I have caught myself replaying a scene or two just to hear that rattle and the words that follow. You sir, have a gift.
I didn't want to detract from the rating this book already has, but, WHAT? I downloaded the book and for 20 minutes all I heard was whining and annoying dramatics. I don't think that in my early twenties or my teenage years would I have found this engaging. Because I bought it, I will listen to the rest of it, maybe it will pull me back from annoyance. If that is the case, I will rewrite this. So far, though, making no sense.
This book was amazing! It wrapped up all of the questions from the previous 4 books. I loved this book! I have already read it twice!!!! Great narrators. Do not start with this book....but if you've read the first 4, this one will knock your socks off!!!
I prefer urban/para romance right now for the fantasy aspect, but I listen to other genres as well.
This book is incredible. The way the author finishes out this series is FANTASTIC. The beginning of the series started out slow, but quickly gained momentum. I would suggest the Shadow series to anyone who likes fantasy romance. I would suggest you read (listen) to her Highlander series first. It introduces you to some of the characters mentioned in the book and makes you feel like you know something others may not know when they listen to this. Great story telling and the narration between Natalie Ross and Phil Gigante really makes this even better.
Karen's final masterstroke in her Fever series is check and mate with a resounding crack that reverberates long after the final page is read!
Barons and MacKayla are finally brought to their knees with the overwhelming depth of their feelings and passion for one another.
All is revealed, yet the drama and mystery builds to combustion level before the final curtain...
Absolutely fabulous dramatic narration and interpretation, by the most talented and gifted artists, Natalie Ross and Phil Gigante! Winning combination! They put you in the moment and shattered you or captivated, making the tale come alive from start to finish!
Brilliant work Karen. Completely and wonderfully different from your Highlander series and far more satisfying!
I don't think there are enough CAPITAL LETTERS and exclamation points for me to use to express my enthusiasm for this series and this hopefully-not-final book!!
I LOVED every minute of this terrific story, these great characters and the absolute drop-dead gorgeous voice of Phil Gigante, who, unbeknownst to him, is MY BOYFRIEND.
I must gush and genuflect at Ms. Moning's literary feet for creating such wonderful characters along with an involving plot with twists and turns and such mystery that all I could think about for days was getting to my ipod.
And all this plus the most beautifully erotic scenes ever!! I'm sorry, but I admit to not getting enough of Jericho and Mac. I've fallen and I can't get up.
Wait there's more! I totally melted when I heard that song at the end!! OMG!! I had to replay it a dozen times. Excuse me while I go listen to it again and then order it.
In conclusion: READ THIS SERIES!!
must read: darynda jones, Karen moning, Ilona Andrews, kim harrison, gena showalter, Karen chance, patricia briggs, jeaniene frost ,L taylor,
I love love love this series! The narration is fantastic. Phil Gigante is soooo good! I really don't want this series to end!
What a great ending to the adventure of Mac and Barons! I was drawn into this story so strongly that I wept with Mac and felt as tho I was there on that cliff with her. There are parts in this saga that are lengthy but over all this is a wonderful tell of magic and love. I highly recommend you to start at the beginning and immerse yourself into this world until the end. The narrators are excellent, Phil Gigante makes Barons come to life.I hope you enjoy these books as much as I have. Happy listening!!
This is not a stand alone read. Alone this book would make little sense to readers not familiar with the characters and plot twists.
I read the first three in print, getting more absorbed with the unraveling each time. I listened to book 4 Dreamfever on audio and was hooked. Told in the fist person, the main character of Mac jumps into your head and you can;t believe what she does or experiences next. Phil Gigante and Natalie Ross bring a life to all their characters better than my own imagination. Paranormal, fantasy, romance, mythology, humor and mystery! Shadowfever on audio is a grand finale you don't want to end.
