The combination of words and wonderful narration of this book made me feel as if I was there. While this was a heartbreaking story, it was a real reminder of the brutality of war.
This book has helped me realize, I don't read enough non-fiction. I had to remind myself at times that this was a true story. Makes one wonder how the story of Louie Zamperini???s dramatic life was not already told.
This was such an amazing story. It's hard to believe that people could survive the torment and torture that these POWs endured. Louis Zamporini's life is an inspiring testament to the resilience of the human spirit!
An amazing life story. Told in a way that kept me enthralled from beginning to end. Loved it! 5 stars all the way!
His courage and forgivness that is a tribute to the greatness of the ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances. If there were more people in the world like this there would be more hope for mankind to overcome the cycle of hatred that plagues the human species.
This was going to be four stars right up until the last chapter, and then I realized it has changed my life. It is a fabulous survivor story. In fact, if it weren't a true story, you would swear the author was making it so unbelievable that you would have given up a long time ago asking yourself what she thought she was doing, or who she was trying to kid. Things just go from bad to worse to incomprehensibly worse. That anyone lived to tell this story is nothing short of miraculous, but that is not the only miracle in this story. It is truly a tribute to how much the human mind and body can endure, and how much easier life is when we depend on a higher power, that is to say, God, to help us through the horrible times. We all go through tough times, but I hope and pray I never have to go through anything close to what these men went through.
Edward Herrmann is a very good narrator. He really made this story come alive.
What a an inspirational story. How these men stood all the torture and still survived Is amazing. It makes you proud of our military men and women.
Unbelievable story of courage, disappointment, faith, and forgiveness. It is hard to believe that this is a true story.
What is the audio equivalent of a page turner? Ear-grabber? Whatever. This is it. I couldn't stop listening. Edward Herrmann is just icing on the cake. He is the best reader in the game.
You need to listen to this book. The recount of the life, trials, success, and torture Louis Zamperini is shocking. As an active duty Army officer, I'm a huge fan of WWII history and first hand narratives which recreate the war and history through the eyes of those who experienced it. I'm often in awe of what these men and women accomplished. This story left me dumbfounded. The accomplishments and events described, will leave you inspired and hopefully thankful for your life and what the 'greatest generation' sacrificied for our country and rest of the world.
