Nick having to tell John's parents that he was dead.
I can take care of myself!
This was my first reading by the author. Great work, great narrating.
Just a Latino living life in NYC
Glad to have listen to a book with a female overcoming issues and a good current story line.
I like a good cop story with a little romance thrown in. This book had some twists but nothing big. The story as a whole was very good.
The production looped chapters, some chapters were repeated more than twice, which made listening to this very confusing
The story line was good
The editors should have listened to this book before releasing, maybe they would have caught the repetition of the chapters.
Say something about yourself!
Good story , nice characters you'll have a good time reading it
It is my first
I don't know . Perhaps the first one
When all the police working on the case meet at Sam's father home
The caracters and are too flat, too unreal.
suspense, mystery, romance
the characters were a great fit for a great setting to tell the story
This was my first book by Marie Force.I really enjoyed this book, the characters and the storyline. The plot kept you guessing, especially figuring the why. The book starts with a Senator's chief of staff discovering the Senator murdered in his home (with a certain part of his anatomy cut off and crammed in his mouth - yes, this is all in the first chapter). That definitely piqued my interest. Detective Sam (Samantha) Holland is called to the murder scene and finds a "hook-up" from 6 years prior is the chief of staff, Nick, who called in the murder. The book continues with the rekindling of the relationship between Sam and Nick while looking for the killer and into the complicated life of the murdered Senator, who was also Nick's closest friend. There was a good mix of suspense, mystery and romance in this book. This was a great read and I am looking forward to reading (or listening too) the other books in this series.
Voracious reader/listener: I usually have one ebook and one audiobook going at a the same time. I'm a very eclectic reader so I tend to switch genres after every book. I'm open to most genres but my favorites in audio are mystery and fantasy (epic and urban both).
This book started great. The mystery was multi-layered with a complex victim. Most of the time in mysteries/romantic suspense, murdered people are just bodies and the reader rarely gets to see them as real people with virtues and vices. Not in this one. The friends and family of the murdered Senator showed real grief at his passing and it was wonderful to see Nick, the hero, being overwhelmed by the murder of his best friend.
But around a third of the way in, the story became dragging and boring. At this point, the focus was on the investigation and we had to see every single interview Sam (the heroine) conducted and her pushing around all the witnesses. Worse, the relationship between her and Nick jumped from non-existent to her telling him (over and over and over) how they couldn't be together while she was on the case. It seemed unbelievable to me that a man in his position wouldn't understand the issues of a detective getting together with a material witness.
Then when it seemed as if there was some headway in the investigation, the focus switched to Sam's myriad issues. A stalking first husband, a couple of health problems, several work related controversies including a previous case gone horribly wrong plus her relationship with Nick. She should have been pulled off the case so fast but everybody kept giving her chances and chances. And the constants pats on the back!! Every two seconds somebody would mention what a great cop Sam was, how insightful, blah, blah, blah. It was maddening.
Her relationship with Nick was so sugary and maudlin. They confessed their love really fast and every other minute were giving declarations of undying love *roll eyes* or fighting because she felt she had to call all the shots.
At the end, the solution to the murder was rushed with several more bodies thrown in just for kicks - which btw, Sam didn't pay as much attention and she should have.
The narration was good but I had to speed it up at around 1/3 in. I don't blame the narration, just the slow pace of the story.
Even though I had problems with this book, I was considering checking out the rest of the series until I learned the rest of the books feature the same couple! I didn't like Sam enough to be in her head so much.
Audible has been a lifesaver as I continue to go through the process of physical recovery.
After reading the reviews my expectations for this book were high. At times it delivered. I had several problems with the story however. First I have never read a book about today's world where police officers had the amount of power Sam and her colleagues did. Second an investigating officer sleeping with someone involved in an investigation? The level of romance in his book seemed to be preponderantly heavy vis a vis the amount of police work. though the book had it's moments it isn't one I can recommend.
I read so I can write
I am so impressed with this book I am almost speechless. The strong strong character relationships carry a powerful mystery that kept me guessing until the final chapter. This was a great beginning to a series. I am hooked and going for the next book.
This was my first Marie Force book and I bought it on the current special. I am so glad I did.
The narrator wasn't the best but she didn't ruin this wonderful book. This is definitely one going my list of books to listen to again.
4 stars for the couple. The romantic suspense part is pretty straight forward . But I really liked Sam and Nick and their chemistry. Something about them felt so real. Good enough to get me excited about the next book. I can't wait to see how their relationship progresses!
