"A warm-hearted story of an interesting life"
I enjoyed this autobiography and agree with other reviewers that being read by the author added greatly to the pleasure. His chuckles on the recording at points in his story when he remembers some event is an endearing feature. Michael Caine comes over as a self-deprecating and warm-hearted person who has had an amazing life. He certainly didn't have instant stardom, but his obvious acting ability has stood the test of time. Like most people he's had some low points and worries in his life but overall it's an inspiring story of a boy, from what would now be called a deprived background, who made good through tenacity and good luck.
"Like catching up with an old mate..."
I'll admit I am a fan of Michael Caine's films and find the actor very engaging and likeable and, for me, a guide of quality. if he's in it, I am very likely going to like it. And so it was an added pleasure that this title fulfills your expectations so well.
It really is like sitting in a pub on a lazy Sunday afternoon and catching up with an old mate. Caine is engaging, funny, insightful and often poignant as he recalls his amazing journey from the rough streets of South London to the glitterng, but no less dangerous, streets of Hollywood.
Along the way Caine shares memories of meeting the big stars of the old school of movies like John Wayne, and you find yourself totally carried along as he describes how the industry exploded in the 60s, with the old school and old ways of working swept aside by the new, young band of film-makers.
A highly recommended title
What more is to be said, a supurb listen and read by the only person who could do this story justice....
Well Done Michael.
I have really enjoyed listening to Sir Michael tell his own story in his own way. It's been a joy and has often felt like we are are in the same room and he is telling me his stories 'face to face'. Michael tells it as it is with no frills or fancy prose, just as he did in his earlier book, 'What's it all about'. It is an easy listen and an ideal relax for the journey home from work.
"Terrific and Torn"
Justin's review on 15th October says everything I feel about this book. I don't have the hardback but can only imagine that having Michael Caine read to you is one up on reading it yourself.
I haven't finished the book yet, what I have listened to is terrific and I am torn between wanting to keep on listening, but not wanting to the book to end.
Highly, highly recommended
"honest and heartwarming"
I could listen to Michael talk all day. Taking you from his early years of harship and evacuation through to the spangles and glitz of Hollywood Michael's story is fascinating. His love for his family and friends is obvious and I cried when I heard the remarkable story he uncovered after his mother died. I loved the anecdotes and gossip about the stars of Hollywood and Michaels awe at meeting some of his screen idols. A great listen.
"all the better for being read by the author"
Michael Caine reads his own book and this adds to the emotion of the story, you hear him trying not to cry and trying not to laugh throughout. The book itself covers michaels career and touches on his relationships and friendships, most inspiringly his mother, who he never truely knew until her death. It provides a clearer picture of all the elements that provide Michael Caine with such enthusiasm and passion for life. I finished this audiobook feeling like Michael and I saw more eye to eye than I would have thought and liking him all the more for the very real emotion shown throughout.
I've very much enjoyed this book being read by the author. His voice adds so much to the story, which in itself is a good insight in to his life and the films he has been in.
"How this book should be 'read'!"
Bought this as a book a few years ago, but never really got into it as all the time I kept thinking "Wouldn't it be great if Michael Caine was reading this."
This is exactly what I was looking for!
Caine tells the story of his life from his childhood in East London through his many years of fluctuating success in the film industry with great wit and emotion; as you'd expect for an actor of his talents.
Want to know about Caine? Buy this book and hear it from the man himself!
"I have read this four times now"
and each time have been wonderfully entertained by Michael Caine, his stories and humour. Marvellous.
