All I can say is yuck, or maybe gross and because there is a minimum you have to type for a review to post , I wrote this as well. Just in my opinion the book is worthless and I didn't even get very far into the story. I just could not listen to the story. Sorry to anyone that is offended by my review, it is only my opinion. (That and 5$ will get you a small cup of coffee in today's economy)
I got this book because I love horror. The pretense is good, a nice little take on vampires, however there are extra characters that aren't needed, graphic sex scenes that really don't need to be in the book (perhaps the author gets off on grossing people out) and other scenes in the book just act as useless filler. The book moved slow, made no sense in parts and was very tough to get through. I was really hoping that I would enjoy this book and would be able to write a great review, but I can't. Just listening to the book makes me feel very disjointed and scratching my head as to what was just said and why. It was as if the author had trouble transferring his thoughts for the book to paper, somewhere in between the connection got lost.
This was listed on The Historian page on Audible as a book that people who liked The Historian liked this one. The Historian is a lovely and elegant story about...well, you know! This book is icky, gritty, has a child continually beaten up and basically tortured, and I gave up when a hint of pedophilia cropped up. I need to contact Audible and get this yucky thing removed from my list of books as my children often dip into my account.
With all the vampire books out now I decided to advance beyond the Twilight series in the hopes that I would be entertained. I had a hard time getting into this book as I don't enjoy reading about children being tormented, chasticed and bullied by their peers. I had to stop listening when there was a more graphic than need be description of a pedophile "encounter". It just totally disgusted me and I could no longer listen. Very disappointed and sorry that I wasted a precious credit!!
Not even Steven Pacey could save this one. I don't see what some of the other reviewers saw in this book, but I obviously missed it. It started out okay and seemed to be going in the right direction and then it was going in no direction. There we some interesting characters and Pacey did an admirable job with the voices but even he seemed confused and struggled to get the tempo right at times. This book was not the least bit scary - creepy maybe, but scary...not even close. It was difficult to follow at times and I found myself going back more than once to try and make sense of things, but it did not help much. I hung out to the end hoping there might be something that pulled it all together, explained some things, made the trip worth while.....it did not happen. The ending flat out sucked and did nothing to tidy things up at all. Do not be pulled in by the other reviews. Pass on this one....trust me.
Generally a good book, but editing the few minutes of graphic child molestation early in the novel would not have hurt the story line. (boy scene with teeth pulled out-doesn't belong in literature in any media).
First of all, the narrator did a decent job, I've no real complaints about Steven Pacey. The author, on the other hand, would appear to be a disgusting pervert. I would like to go into greater detail, but I'm afraid that might be considered spoilers and cause this review to not be posted, so instead I will only say this; Do not read this book if you are offended by gay romance, which is initially presented as straight romance, because one of the males in the relationship is said in the story to be female, or by semi-explicit scenes of gay pedophilia.
