A good story as usual by Nicolas Sparks. Characters and story kept interest.
Worth the credit!
This was a cute southern book, but was also a bit predictable. I was looking for another fun romance with a twang and some regular funk, but this story went a little too far into detail too many times to keep my attention. I would recommend the listen, the book was very well written; but if you're low on your credits you might want to keep looking.
I loved this book! It was action packed and told a real story at the same time. As usual, Nicholas Sparks has taken a love story and turned it into so much more! The characters are totally believable and seem to come right out of real life. It started out a little slow, but once you get into it, the story really comes to life and keeps you gripped in its clutches until the very last line!
Nicholas Sparks has to be one of my favorite authors; as soon as he releases a new book, I can't wait to get my hands on a copy. I enjoy reading and listening to books. My favorite though is listening; especially if the narrartor is chosen well and in Safe Haven Rebecca Lowman was the perfect choice. I can begin listening to a book and the narrator makes the decision wheither I will continue listening or not.
The story was interesting until the end, which I predicted (and I'm really bad at predicting). The final ending wasn't that great. The narrators voice was GREAT! The good thing about the book was that it went smoothly and was easy listening. (no thinking) involved. Just a few characters which was nice to listen to in the car.
This book is sappy, which isn't necessarily bad. Sometimes we all need a little of that in our lives.
What I couldn't stand was the horrible ending. I won't spoil anything for anyone, but the last chapter really ruined it for me. It was the Hallmark Channel ending that nobody needed.
I thought this would be a wonderful book since I am a Nicholas Sparks fan, but was quickly disappointed. The book, I feel, is overly descriptive and lacks a real story. I didn't get into it until the end and by that time I decided to accept it as a wasted credit and stopped listening. If I were you, I would wait for the movie.
I begin by saying that I am a devout fan of Nicholas Sparks. I have read and enjoyed his every work. I am a sucker for tragedy and romance intertwined, and no one delivers such equal parts of the two in writing as does Sparks. While his plots are mocked by some for their predictability, he always delivers in depiction of a "working man's romance," if you will. In Safe Haven, he creates, as always, believable characters (save one) embarking on a believable romantic path together. His dialogue is as down-to-earth and unstilted as is generally the case with his writing. His main characters are at once likable and interesting and his commonly chosen small town setting is as charming as per the norm. Everything is in place for a delivery of yet another enjoyable, albeit likely tear-jerking, Sparks-ian plot.
However, the book went off the rails somewhere in the middle. The ending "surprise twist" was in plain sight very early. The book attempted to be a thriller/horror but came off like a Lifetime movie. The climax was unbelievable, the characterization of the "villian" became caricature-esque toward the end. The resolution was hasty, at best, giving prominence to the heavily foreshadowed twist. I SO wanted to love this just as I have his others. I did not. It was undistinguishable from a Sandra Brown or ^various other "romantic suspense" novelist's works. That's a negative for me.
Positives: Narrator is excellent. Main characters are likable. Still better than anything in the typical "Romantic Suspense" category (but only barely) Nearly certain we won't have to see this one in movie format.
Negatives: Plot. Sparks can do, and has done, much better than this.
This was my 1st Audiobook. Sparks wrote this well, good story line (reminded me of the movie sleeping with the enemy) but a different twist at the end. The narrator did a good job, but haven't listened to others as this was my 1st.
Didn't like the narrator, the story was boring, and the ending was so weird.
I hate wasting money so I listened till the end but definitely not one of his best. "The Choice" was 1000 times better!!!
