First, I should say that I do enjoy Nicholas Spark's books. I'm a sucker for a love story, and his are great. "Safe Haven" gave me just what I wanted along those lines. You were rooting for the characters and felt invested in their lives (Spark's specialty). The thing that sets this book apart from the others was the surprise ending! I'm not going to tell, but I didn't see it coming. . .Enjoy!
Life is great!
The surprises in this book continued from beginning to end. I always enjoy the magic that Nicholas Sparks brings to his books and this one was, in my opinion, one of the best. This book had a little more suspense and mystery than other books by this writer.
Ms. Lowman's narration was excellent. She has such a great ability to go between men, women and children and make you feel that there really are several different people performing this story.
The mysterious woman next door. I would like to know what she learned about the place she lived before she moved back to this town. 😉
I must say I am not super into predictable love stories, but this one was not at all what I thought it would be. From the first few minutes of listening to it up until the end , I was entertained! The story of a woman with a "secret" who tries to rebuild her life but also finds a friend... possibly something more was great. The ending had me tearing up a little (which rarely happens). I would definitely reccomend this audio book! Just to be clear this IS NOT a predictable story, I just thought it might be at first.
Avid reader....... passionately addicted to Audible!
This is the usual type story for Nicholas Sparks.....although enjoyable like all his books. A very middle of the road read.
This was a well written book with anticipated events in the end, but also some twist. Nicholas Sparks blended the present with the past story line well, going back and forth to explain Katie's history and why her character is hesitant to put down roots. While I was able to anticipate part of the ending, there was a twist at the very end which was a nice surprise.
I found the story to be burdened with unneccesary and repetitive details. The ending was definitely not for me with its religious/spiritual connotation. The characters were thin, and their thoughts and actions were also repetitive.
Not sure, but not this author. I want to try listening to some classic fiction so maybe that's next.
Yes, I think the narration was much better than the story. The suspensful ending was particularly well done.
I though the villain in this story was the most interesting character and the only one I felt I learned something about. Also, the suspensful climax was engaging.
No, I was disappointed with the narration.
The twist at the end.
Young, inexperienced, soothing
Katie, she was the main character.
This audio book was just so so. It entertained me enough, but the narrator's delivery just bothered me. The more audio books I listen to, the more I realize the importance that the narrator has on my enjoyment of it. It can be a fantastically written book but the narrator makes or breaks it. That's kind of how I felt about this one. I think if I had read it myself I would have enjoyed the book a lot more than I did by listening to it.
Safe Haven is a run of the mill story about a woman escaping her dark past of spousal abuse. I've enjoyed some of Nicholas Sparks' work in the past, but calling this book cliched is like calling the Amazon a 'creek' .
I wish I'd been able to read my own review before I bought it.
Safe Haven was a very paint by numbers victim romance. The characters were ill defined and not very exciting. The narrator sounded like someone who had been taking valium, except when she read the part of Jo and then she sounded like she had been drinking too much coffee. She reached a level of interest in some of the climactic scenes, but it was too little too late. And though the ending was a surprise. it was so clumsy it did not payoff. This is a typical Nicholas Sparks romance, and he is not one of my favorites. I bought the book on the half price sale, but I should have waitied for the quarter price sale, Then it would have been worth the money.
