It is a great book, love the fact of 45 hours, slow in spots, but I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. The 2 person narration is great! I would get lost in the book and !Bam! I was already to the next part.....I didn't think I was going to like it at first and said 'what the heck, only 1 credit' and a couple of times during the first 4 hours or so I would almost put it away for another book, but I was always brought back for wanting to know more! Good job! Can't wait for the next book in the series!
I read a few fantasy books when I was younger, but got mostly into "non-genre" fiction when I got a little older. I bought this title on a gamble, never having heard of Brandon Sanderson, because it was a good deal, and I am always looking to make my credits stretch a bit further. I do not regret it! I'll admit, it took me forever to get into this book . . . maybe 4-5 hours, which is a good long time, but once I was in, I was hooked.
Of the four main stories, I feel that Dalinar's and Kaladin's are quite well developed. Szeth is a mystery that I am eager to know more about. Shallan irritates me, but Jasnah makes up for her.
I recommend this to anyone who has the patience to get hooked. Once you're in, you're in.
First off the book almost seems like a prequel to a story. Second the story really drags at certain points and the plot is elusive at times and you will wish that some exciting event would occur. Despite this the writing is top notch, and it just doesn't get any better than listening to Mike and Kate read a book!
I could not stop listening, I had it done in 3 days it was amazing
This is a looooooonnnnnggggg book. And the momentum sometimes drops way down. Some characters are left in the air for many chapters, and the various different parts seem very loosely connected.
That said, like a game of cricket or a good vintage wine, it rewards those who stick it out and let the tapestry come together. The book includes a lot of new concepts in fantasy writing, and is clearly based on a very rich backstory and "magic" system.
Michael and Kate read it excellently as always.
I'm surprised at how much Brandon Sanderson is able to write. He came out with the 13th book of the Wheel of Time series on 8/31 (?) and now he has come out with The Way of Kings a little over a month later. I just got done listening and I am very excited for the rest of this series. For the level of story telling that takes place, I'm surprised at the amount he has written. It's truly astonishing. If you haven't checked out his other books, you need to. Especially Mistborne, DO IT NOW! You wont regret it.
I don't post many reviews but I felt compelled to recommend this book. I think Brandon S. has been honing his craft and combined with 2 of the best narrators in the business, this book is a step above everything else I've downloaded thus far. Michael K.'s hard, dark voice inflection truly complements the story. This is one of those books you can't leave your car for - don't miss it. The only downside is waiting for the next installment in the series.
One of the best written books I've had the pleasure of knowing in a long long time. Listening to Audible has allowed me to "read" the book several times over. And it is worth it, Each time I listen to it (now on 4th listen) I pick up things i missed in the previous ones. Each time I listen to it I'm still awed by how good the story is. I'd give it an 10 star if it was a 10/10 rating.
I don't usually write reviews but I thought this book was worth one.
It's obvious that the author have put alot of time into the book and the world. As the book progresses a world is slowly built up in your mind with different classes, races, religions and so on. You learn of the history of this world and its obvious that the book is the foundation for a much larger series. But at the same time we are following the current events of the world trough the eyes of a few characters and its a great pace through the whole book, with twists and turns.
A great foundation for an hopefully epic series. To bad its 2-3 years before the next one is out. ^^
I now know why Brandon Sanderson was picked to finish the wheel of time.. Excellent book..One of the best I have listened to.
