Enough detail and description that you start to understand the characters.
Book starts to describe the races of the four lands and how they interact.
Didn't end up finishing this one, so it may get better further in, but what I did listen to I found frustrating. I have loved many Terry Brooks novels in the past, so I was a kind of disappointed. Yes, they can be formulaic, but it's a formula I like and usually I enjoy them a lot. The main character in this one I found annoying and hard to buy into as a hero. He seems to spend most of his time suffering from contrived moral dilemmas without actually doing anything to get himself out of them or using his brain at all, ever. There's nothing wrong with the narration, and I wouldn't hesitate to listen to a different book with the same narrator, but it wasn't overwhelming either.
Say something about yourself!
Yes I would recommend this story to a friend, it was an awesome story.
I liked the story line and the details.
The most memorable character in the story for me is Cyder Raymond, known as the gray man.
The story is a little rough at the beginning but has a great, great ending few chapters. I really liked how the story pulled together to show how all of the characters in the story are effected and how their lives are drastically changed by the occurrences that are happening around them.
As a professional crochet and knitwear designer I have a lot of time to sit and listen to books. Makes the work day better!
I listen to a LOT of audiobooks. My profession allows for me to work and listen to audiobooks at the same time. I need a book that is going to keep my attention and entertain me. Usually, I finish a 13 hour book in a day and a half...this one is only 13.5 hours and I am on my fifth day listening to it and I am only 1/2 of the way through. It is so terribly boring!
As for the narration, I actually really enjoy the way Phil Gigante narrates so that was the best part for me.
IMHO:Save your credits and borrow this book from the library.
I havent read the book, i work quite a bit so i like audiobooks to help past the time.
i loved it when they went to the elven city they gave great detail about the plants , flowers you can see them in your mind i just love the details of the story.
I love phil voice i hope any other terry brooks books come out for audio that phil does the characters.
The story is a decent one for fans of the series and part of a bridge between Shannara eras. The narration is overdone. The female voices are particularly painful. The reader would bring my grade lower, except I enjoy the series. If you want to have the bridge story, borrow the dead tree version from your local library.
Good story. Typical Terry Brooks. Some of the narrators "voices" are good, but most are awful and hard to get through. All the female voices are whiney.
I found the Bearers of the Black Staff to be a very good listen. I was very glad to see the references to the previous books in the word & void series. If you listen or read armageddons children and the two after it then you should love this book. I feel like he is slowly leading us to what we are used to seeing in the shannara series. Get this book it is a must read!
