The story was brilliant for its time: there was great inclusion of the geology known then, and a wholly fantastic setting just underneath it. The foibles were those of German academics then, well visible to a French author. If pieces of the story haven't aged well, the insight they give us to our history are still important.
But Tim Curry's narration is brilliant for all time. He nails the voices of every speaking character, including the exasperating habits of our protagonist. He conveys the wonder, the arrogance, the reality checks, and the settings so well, he could narrate your own dreams.
Verne had an art and command of eloquent vocabulary like I've never seen before. He has a way of choosing words that not only deepens the understanding of characters and plot, but it makes the reading of the book like the eating of rich and decadent chocolate-- the taste is rich and satisfying in small amounts.
Possibly the best performance I've ever heard in an audiobook. Text is full of science-with-an-exclamation-point, I loved every line.
Sci-Fi, Fantasy and sometimes a good horror book, I also like a classic now and then.
Yes, its a classic and a good read (listen) My all time favorite book and movie (old school pat boone movie)
Tim Curry, I wish he would do more classics. Audible need more signature performances of the old school classics. Give me gritty, famous actors to read these classics and Il buy them. Give a fresh look at timeless books with a great reading from a great narrator like tim curry.
Top notch, wish he could do more, but I know he is getting sick... Thank you Mr. Curry for the books and movies you did share with us.
No, I hate abridged books, give me the full version and respect the authors true writes. No abridged books please.
Jules Verne has such a commanding and old world writing style, truly classic, especially when you look at he he created these classics.Great production, keep this sort of production going for the classics, seek after unique and commanding voices. It makes it that more special.
I really enjoyed Tim Curry's reading. Great language, good story. Loved the scientific observations and the professor vs student discussions. This is the first book I've had a difficult time listening to. Quite often the reading would stop and I would have to restart Audible. It was very frustrating and lead to my lower rating.
Decent book, but incredible narration. The book itself is a classic and it's obvious why, however the narration of this, by Tim Curry, might be the best audiobook narration I've encountered thus far.
