The book itself was good, interesting characters and plotlines. It ties in well to Cassandra Clare's other series, the Mortal Instruments.
As a narrator, if you cannot do an accent well, please do not try. The English accent was not very good, and this was emphasized by the transition from American to English accents. Also, changing your voice for different characters can be good (see Jim Dale), but in this case it really took away from the story. When the narrator read in her regular voice, she was good, but the shrill shrieks and "deep" voices used for some of the characters was extremely distracting. Prononciation also was not consistent throughout the novel.
...and what a read. I can hardly wait for the next book so I am starting another set by her. Cannot say enough good about her, but the narrator is not the best choice. Hope she gets a new one with better voice range and control. jd
If you're a fan of teenage romance novels, then you'll probably like this book. The plot attempts to be twisty, and it's not horrible, but it's not exactly breaking any new ground. The author's premise is interesting enough, but the story never really goes anywhere.
My biggest problem with this book was the ongoing trend in young adult novels where an otherwise smart, independent heroine falls for some complete jerk, whose semi-abusive attitude is 'justified' by his dark/mysterious emotional issues. Will treats Tess like garbage, and instead of punching him one in the face, she just mopes around wondering what she did wrong. I just think it's a terrible message for young people. Emotional abuse is still abuse.
So basically, if you can get through the book without wanting to give the egocentric, emotionally stunted "hero" a good kicking, then you'll probably want to buy the whole series.
"My test of a good book is dreading to begin the last chapter." - Thomas Helm
Enjoyed this book. It was a slow start, as stated by many other audible reviews, but once it gets going (1/2 way through) it picks up pace & gets exciting. It's not that slow is bad or boring, it wasn't. Just a slower pace than say The Mortal Instruments series.
Reader did a wonderful job on making each character voice unique.
I'm all about challenging myself lately so I'm using books to do that. They inspire & engage me so I can see what works. Reading is my life.
I would love to listen to this book again. The Narrator does a great job and the book is AWESOME!
I have read (& listened to) the entire Mortal Instruments Series and Cassandra Clare made the Infernal Devices just as good. Tessa is a wonderful character that you just can't help but love! This book is well worth the money and honestly I loved it! I would recommend to any one who love The Victorian Era.
This urban fantasy to centered around The Nephilim, a race descended from angles, who's mission in life is to protect the Mundane people of the world from a fascinating array of Downworlders.
My one beef with Clare is that her heroins, although strong, smart and powerful, always fall for the very meanest boy they can find. It's not as if said heroin doesn't have a choice. Because of Clare's pathological over used of love triangles, there is always a sweet, kind boy hanging around, just waiting to be noticed. Don't even get me started on the seriously messed up situation in The Mortal Instruments series.
I have never read this type of book before, but I decided to take leap and try it. Cassandra Clare creates an entire new world where Shadowhunters and Underworlders live. She is able to describe the setting vividly while keeping a breathless pace in the storyline. Other than the setting, the story is really about relationships: loyalty, love, and betrayal. What makes this a great book is the combination of suspense, supernatural, and a hint of romance. The three are woven together beautifully so that it never feels forced or an afterthought. The narration is also done well and is enjoyable. Overall, it is definitely worth a credit.
I only experienced the audio edition but I am sure that the performance makes listening better for me.
That the author was able to make me suspend belief to this extent.
Hard to say
Wind up for a great ride.
I just picked this one up on a lark. I was not sure I could make it through something so outside my normal genres but I enjoyed the ride.
I really liked the narrator, though Tessa sounded older than she was. Her performance was very good. Her character portrayals were not annoying or unbelievable. I truly enjoyed listening to this novel being read.
There really wasn't one. It was overall a good book but not as
I really liked the chapter when Tessa first meets Jem in the middle of the night while he is playing the violin in his room. I don't know why that scene touched me but it did.
Will be anxious to see if the next novel in the series Clockwork Prince has more action and flavor!
Gripped me from the beginning.. couldn't 'put it down' so to speak. As soon as I finished I used my new credit for the next installment!
Loved the relationship between Will and Tessa... can't wait to find out about his dark past.
