One of the best books I've heard.
A fairy tale love story of an impoverished Prince who is to be wed to a wealthy Russian Princess, after falling in love with another.
With only money enough to care for his responsibilities (aunts, uncles, brothers, cousins, servants, estate upkeep, and a menagerie with elephant, monkey and lion) for a few months, he must marry quickly, sacrificing his heart for his responsibilities.
The talented Susan Duerden's performance, read with such feeling, had me laughing at times, and shedding a tear at others. She was the perfect narrator for this book.
Any Historical Romance lover should enjoy A Kiss at Midnight!
Skeptical of yet another Cinderella story, I decided to purchase this book. I am pleased to say that I enjoyed every minute of listening to it. I'll have to admit this is one of E James's better books I have read recently. Contrary to my expectations, I feel she did an amazing job of building charecters and story telling with a twist of humor. Great job and unexpected!!!!
Fairytales never shared this much heat! Fun and heartwarming.
The rescue from the lake was a daring turning point.
Gabriel's hot wanton voice
Finding true love among the shard of the discarded.
A nice enjoyable Cinderella story. I enjoyed the book and I agree with other reviews as fluff for the ears. LOL
This was my first Eloisa James book and I found it to be a lot of fun. I would definitely recommend it!
Eloisa James books remind me of all the things I love about Susan Elizabeth Phillips books: witt, romance, a little heart break and interesting characters.
All of the characters had distinct, pleasing voices.
This book was an absolute joy to listen to! James does a great job creating a fresh take on one of the world's most popular fairy tales. However, be forewarned, like many of James' other books that it is definitely an "adult" read. Although calling it erotica would be too strong it is a very "hot" version of Cinderella. Lots of tension and build up that leads to a great ending. MUST read for any fantasy or romance reader. Very well done!
reviews for fun
I think Susan Duerden is one of the best narrators. If you are into Cinderella type stories (with a slight twist), this one will not fail you. Very nicely done.
I loved this story. It had just the right amount of adorability without being sappy. It was an enjoyable, entertaining, light read with a ‘Happily Ever After’ ending. I loved the author’s adaptation of the Cinderella story and the fact that she made it clear this is a fairy tale not a historical novel. The personalities of the characters were diverting and humorous.
In addition, the narrator did a wonderful job on the voices. I hate it when female narrators make the men sound like dumb oafs when they are supposed to be intelligent and refined. How am I supposed to wish the heroin gets her man when all I want him to do is put on a dunce cap, go sit in the corner and please, please shut-up. I hope the others in this series are just as good – I can’t wait to get started!
This is one of the best books I have ever listened too! This is your typical Cinderella story and I would recommend this book to everyone!
It was a sweet, feel-good, enjoyable romance story. A nice escape. I liked the collection of various character types. It made interesting interaction. I wish some romance authors would do more of this. For that reason I rounded up to 4 stars rather than down to 3. There is the sweet, naive, not-too-smart, frequently-crying stepsister; the selfish cruel stepmother; the arrogant, starkly-masculine, beautiful prince who does not want to be a prince. He’d rather be on an archaeological dig. I liked that the prince did not like Kate when he met her. He claimed he wanted a biddable bed-able woman. I liked his best friend/majordomo Wick who was smart. Wick said for himself, he would be bored by a biddable woman.
The prince and Kate spent a lot of time together which provided dialogue and relationship development that I liked.
I liked the phrase: “he was surrounded by a veritable flowerbed of young ladies.”
I was reluctant to read something based on the Cinderella story, but I was pleased with the twists and changes made by the author. It wasn’t a copy. The author’s note at the end says this book is not for readers looking for historical accuracy. This should be considered a fairy tale.
The plot could have been better. The prince has a dilemma which he solves at the end. He should have considered and discussed that solution a lot earlier, but that would have ended the story too soon. Because of other positives I was willing to look past that.
Don’t read this for hot sex scenes. It was odd, not romantic, and not very passionate the way she chose to give her virginity and the timing of that scene. It was sort of a quickie. Other scenes were warm rather than hot, but ok.
The narrator Susan Duerden is excellent. I love the way she reads the prince. She makes him sound soooo seductive.
Genre: regency romance - fairy tale style.
