I really savored this story and was sad when it ended. I loved getting to know the characters and related to so many pieces of their lives--specifically the part about not knowing where your life is going in your twenties! I also liked all the little details that made me feel like I was there and helped me remember certain moments in history. It really was just a wonderful listen, and I LOVED the reader/narrator! She's very gifted at doing all the different voices. Very happy with my first audible fiction book.
Chapter after chapter I listened to this book. I am not sure what kept me hanging in there with is because it seemed like a trite and silly love story but the narrator read well and somehow kept me engaged. The second half of the book was moving and I grew to like the characters and was sad as the end approached. It is a story of unrequited love, falling in love, loving your best friend and then.... I can't tell you where it goes but hang in there it is a touching story and well worth your time.
I have to say first that I am not the type to write a review online very often. But something about this story and its characters compels me to write. I listened to this book months ago, but still think about it. I can picture myself part of the story, which is a talent most authors don't have. The reader, Anna Bentinck, was fantastic, adding even more depth to the already involving storyline. I can still hear her voice in my head... Now that there will be a movie, I am left wondering... Can it possibly be as good as the book? Can they even come close to the character development? Do yourself a favor and listen to this first. You won't regret it. (You may need tissues for some parts)
I especially liked the way the author covered the history of the main character's relationships. Somewhat disappointed with the ... don't want to give anything away .... surprise for a main character near end.
Anna Bentinck did a nice smooth job; voice makes or breaks book for me.
I loved this book, the characters and the story made me want to get in my car each morning for my commute to work. Some of the parts in the book and the narrator's great work bringing the book to life made me laugh out loud. I enjoyed the span of time from college to mid-life with all its twists and turns. This book I highly recommend and will be listening to this one again.
One of the greatest I have read in A while. the narrator was soooo good. david nicholls w ords were made all the more real by the excellent narration. I want more david nicholls janet sparks
I gotta say, i loved this book so much and was affected by it all weekend, but not in an uplifting good way. It isn't a simple "romance" book - it is a powerful view of 2 peoples lives that will linger with you long long long after you finish it...i'm a 42 year old male and i sat in my car after i finished it and fought back the tears.
For those that didn't like the "ending" (although it is about 3/4 of the way through that it really changes) then i would say, look at the story as a whole - look at the way she created a view of lives and the effect of love and friendship...you can't help but admire the story even if you don't agree with the direction the author took it...
As we all know, the person who reads the book can make or break a story. The narrator of this book was fantastic. She made the characters come to life (I could have listened to her larger than life "Suki Meadows" all day. Too funny!)
The story itself was wonderful too. You really care for the characters.
Buy this book right now. You will love it I'm certain. I quickly became attached to the characters and the connection that kept bringing them back together over 20 years, a love that only happens when people are made for each other - soul mates. I will keep them with me long after I've forgotten the details of the story. Dex and Em. Em and Dex.
It's rare that I listen to audiobooks more than once, but this one warranted a second listen. I enjoy the intense study of the evolution of a relationship, so this was right up my alley.
Can't wait for the movie!
