12 step program please. I am addicted to Audible! I love trashy sexy books, award winning novels and everything between. Bring it!
I think it is worth the download. The characters really grow on you since you are covering a 20 year friendship. I really enjoyed the friendship: the sexual tension, the growth and changes and how at times they were very close then grew apart. I wasn't keen on the ending. It was disappointing and just went on and on...I won't add a spoiler here. Is it worth the download? I think so. Until the end, I couldn't stop listening to it. The narrator is very good and Em and Dex really grew on me, especially Em.
What a surprisingly great book! This will be in my list of favorites! With a unique story-line and unexpected turns, you have never read anything like it, I can assure you. At first, I wasn't sure how the jumping feel of the book would feel more than one or two jumps in (taking one day a year for many years), being afraid it would feel a bit like Ground Hog's Day. Pleasantly, though, it is nothing like that, and continues to be fresh throughout. Fun, shallow, deep, heartwarming...all in one.
I purchased this audible book based on the reviews. In the beginning I was wondering why but I continued to listen. It was the usual boy meets girl situation. But about 2/3rds the way through the audible it really got good and took some unexpected twists and turns. It was very well written book and an entertaining reading of the book. The last 1/3rd of the book more than makes up for the beginning. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a different author.
This book could not keep my attention. The English accent of the narrator was difficult to understand. I did not finish the book as it was boring and uninteresting.
One of the best stories I've "read" in a long, long time. Recommend this book to everyone.
This is the story of what happens when two whiners don't get together. She's a perfectionist. He's a drunk. I had to force myself to listen to it and I'm still not through it. And all I can hear is Anne Hathaway's voice in my head, and I like Anne Hathaway.
Very good writing, very original and excellent format/structure, the concept of one day on the calendar. For the most part the narrator's accent was gentle traditional British, delivered in a musically soothing monotone but every time she lapsed into characters other than the two protagonists she became loud, strident, with extreme peaks and valleys that physically hurt my ears, eg "Waheyyyy!!!" shouting through my earbuds. Eeeccchhh! And having to listen to two characters scream at each other while dancing to loud music was just, well, over the top.
Good that the focus was not so much on worldly successes/failures, but how those life circumstances affected both the emotional/spiritual growth and the devolvement or evolvement of the characters. And good that parts of this had me laughing out loud, particularly at some of the characterizations of the mother and her shallow preoccupations.
I did not see the necessity of such an abrupt ending. Publisher deadline looming or something like that? Who knows...
Still a good listen. Something for a long car ride, bike ride, or long run. Looking forward to the movie.
This book would be so much better if it were tracked by chapter. It is hard to keep track of the day/date of a particular entry because the tracks include several chapters. This is especially true if you are prone to occasionally drifting away(like me). Read the book.
Bought this audible book at least on sale at the same time that the movie was just being released. After almost a year... I managed to finish the book and truly glad that I did not pay to see the movie.
I hope the Audible.com staff doesn't bury my review on the 7th page because it would be a shame for someone to waste their valuable time and credit on this ridiculous book.
The story in a nut shell is about Dexter, a spoiled self centered womanizing alcoholic and Emma his college "mate' or friend whose life was pretty much a bore but managed to become a successful writer. Then years later, She and Dexter reunite after his wife had an affair with his boss and then kicked him to the curb. So he calls Emma in a stupor, they finally get married but can't get pregnant and then she dies. Really.....
