This book has it all, mystery, adventure, humor, romance, and erotica. It is very well written, has interesting and engaging characters, and a fully developed story line. Finally, a "Romance" novel that has depth, rather than those cookie cutter, formula driven, shallow stories that many of this genre produce.
When I clean, drive or exercise I listen to romance. The steamier the better but it must have a great story as well!
The whole time I was listening to this book I was shocked by the similarities between it's story and that of "Fifty Shades of Gray", although it is a historical romance. Lazarus is very much like Christian Gray in the fact that he has to tie down his lovers, he also feels pain when touched. Temperance is a widow that is learning to accept that she enjoys rough lovin' and finds that side of her fulfilled by Lazarus. This book had some very steamy scenes! It was not all about sex it was also the build up! My favorite part is where he takes her to a bordello so that they can interview a boy about a murder, after the interview he takes her to an area where they can peak into the rooms with various forms of "entertainment". Just him standing behind her and whispering in her ear was better than a lot of books I've listened to that just dive into the love scenes. This book had a great mystery, amazing love scenes, well formed characters and a great conclusion. I will definitely be listening to it again and again!
"I wear a fez now, fez's are cool"
Sexy, riveting, charming
House of Rohan series by Anne Stuart are similar, the rest of this series.
I have listened to all of the current Maiden Lane books, 4 of them voiced by Ashford. She does a fantastic job. Her voice is probably one of my favorite too listen to. She is calming, doesn't go overboard with her male voices, the voices for each character is distinctive. I would say she does as skillful a job on this one as she does on the rest of the series.
Would absolutely love to have her come back for the rest of the Maiden Lane series.
Emma Taylor was bloody awful (yes I listened to that book again, and found I couldn't even come close to finishing the listen) and again I will state I will not be purchasing the next book in if Emma Taylor is narrating it.
First time I listened to it no, it took a few tries to get into the story, but once I started listening it was an almost non-stop listen. The second time, I ended up listening to it almost in one sitting. Had to get some sleep though so I stopped for the night at around 4am. /giggle
If you like racy sex scenes, without bombs bursting in air and strong characters then I highly recommend this book. Lazarus does takes some getting used to and his affliction is never explained fully but Elizabeth Hoyt does a great job telling a story of damaged people without going into the realm of wimpy or whiny. Her characters generally know what they want and go for it. There isn't a lot of hemming and hawing so to speak, at least it didn't feel that way to me.
This is an excellent start to a very good series.
Love to read!
I read the other reviews before buying this book and wish I hadn't. I think they gave me too high of expectations. The book was okay, but nothing special. I wish I could give it 3.5 stars. It was a little boring at times, but overall an okay story. The characters were fairly interesting. If the 2nd book in the series is on sale, I will probably get it too, but I won't waste a credit on it or pay a big price.
The narration was quite good.
Audible addicted love mystery, lately stuck on love story. Mother of 1 Labrador and 1 perfect man. Work way too hard, and so ready to be retired
Read others reviews, felt worth a listen. Did not hold its high praise for me no offend but I have heard much greater enjoy the ms dew and mr Care adventure of falling in love but overall story weak.
Different, intense, sexy
Lord Claire stealing into Temperance's house. His ultimate caring for her and the children of the foundling home.
I thought Ashford McNab was the star. I loved her narration. Because the story took
place in St Giles, London, a horrible place, if I had been reading the book, I may not have finished it. For me her voice was so soothing, I was able to truly enjoy it.
I enjoyed all the characters. In addition to the main characters, her sister, Silence had a little a little story to tell I do like stories that have a lot going on with other characters.
It was too long to listen to in one sitting, but I listened to it on my kindle, I would kick back in my recliner, close my eyes and with my ear phones in my ears at night, and listen to it with Ashford McNabs soothing voice. Very relaxing.
I like the story so much that I am now listening to Notorious Pleasures, the 2nd in the series.
Say something about yourself!
The stories are engaging and the characters are interesting. Ashford McNab does a great job with the voices!
I have been married to my wonderful husband for almost 30 years. I love reading - romance, adventure... Captain Blood is really great!
I did not read the book but I really enjoyed listening to it.
The characters interact so well together and I love the mystery that is running in the background the whole time while the male and female leads get to know each other.
I really liked this performance, and I will listen for me of him.
Really got into the story and would have finished it all at one time if I could have.
Recommended to my sister who does not like romance and she liked it a lot.
This novel is a bit more raunchy then romantic. There are multiple scenes throughout the book that are graphically sexual. There is also a bit of mystery in this book with makes a good story. The narrator is very good for this book and others written by Elizabeth Hoyt. Although her voice changes are primarily the same. When I listenened to book 2 of this series I was thinking of the hero from the first book. Perhaps I need to put some time in between each book.
This book was so very interesting. I loved the names of the characters(Temperance, Winter, Silence, etc). The story line was profound and unpredictable. All the characters were interesting, especially Lord Caire. The series promises to be FUN. The loving was awesome. I enjoyed the bi-play of words between the main characters. The suspense of not knowing who is the killer and/or the Ghost, will give those readers who enjoy mysteries a wonderful dilemma to solve.
