I love books! Audiobooks take stories to the next level. I'm obsessed with Audible and will try to rate all of my books. Happy Listening! ;)
"Too much S&M for my taste..."
Theres something about bloody violence and cruelty thy killssany possibility of romance for me. Love and romance cannot be believable when the characters are cruel to each other at times.
I will get one of the Psy Changeling books. Same author, much better narrator (Angela Dawe) and its an interesting paranormal romance without violence, blood and cruelty.
I did not particularly like Ms. Eyre performance but I would conside a future book narrated by her if it sounds better.
No. I liked this book even less that the first so I'm done with this series. The author has a much better paranormal romance series (Psy/Changeling) that I highly recommend.
If you like dark romances and S&M with your love scenes then you will love this book. Othetwise, don't waste your time and credit.
"Bloody and violent"
This is a very difficult book for me to rate. On one hand, Singh has written a complex world and a multi-layered plot. On the other hand, there were many repetitive phrases and thoughts, especially in the first half of the book, that got old. On top of that, the book is stuffed full of really sick torture and scenes of cruelty.
So, while I appreciate that Singh can be a creative and skilled writer, I do not enjoy her characters or her stories. There was no one to like in these books, except perhaps Elena and a few of her Guild friends. The angels and vampires, especially the archangels, are almost without redeeming features. They are casually cruel, jaded, careless of life, and after centuries of living, need ever increasing stimuli to feel anything, making them especially prone to torture for pleasure.
The slow reveal of Elena's nightmare was disturbing and revolting. Really, there wasn't much to like here, at least not for me.
I will not continue with the series. I was very tempted to give this 2 stars, but will concede 3 stars based on the quality of writing...or the potential, for I felt like Singh wasted pages on repetition in this book.
The narrator, Justine Eyre, is quite popular, but her voice and delivery didn't work for me. The entire book is delivered in an emotionless, almost monotone, voice. I can understand using that voice for the angels, especially the archangels, but not for Elena or even the vampires. Eyre does distinguish well between the characters, but they all had the almost identical flat tone.
"To much"
I do enjoy the angel, vampire hunter aspect of the story, thats for sure. It could be built upon for many years with so many different species and characters. The sad thing is she is drowning it in graphic sex scenes. One or two with out all the graphic detail would be much better. I usually like to share and recommend my series since I tend to follow a group of books to the end, these will not get a recommendation from me at all.
No, to many graphic sex scenes
The whiny voice for the main female character. Haard to believe she is a strong warrior female and have a whiny nasal voice.
"Entertaining"
A typical harlequin novel with wings and heighten senses. The structure of the society is interesting.
"UGH!"
This book is a great example of how to take an excellent idea, throw in hints and tidbits that tantalized the reader into thinking that its going to be great... only to ruin the whole damn thing by making it more of a bad porn than an excellent fantasy book.
I thought the first book was intriguing enough to over look the odd porn vibe. But this book had me fast forwarding past scenes after scene dripping with bad porn vibes. Maybe an errotica fan will disagree with assessment. But, after listening through hours of of irrational sex scenes to catch only glimpses of the angels, vampires, and world that Singh created, I'm done with this series. Its sad, as there is HUGE potential in her world and characters. I find the emotional scares on each of her characters to add depth, and her world is real(if not fully fleshed out). The problem lies in her emphasis on sex and all the little details, rather than writing a good book. Each one of her sex scenes is longer than all of the important battle scenes put together. It really makes the story BLAH.
