This book was suggested to me. I was not that interested by the written description but within ten minutes of listening I was hooked! It is not preachy or sanctimonious. It has a refreshing, unique storyline and cast of characters. If you like adventures with a hint of romance and protagonists with integrity and intelligence, this will be an interesting book.
The performance was very well done and the reader did a five star job. The only reason I gave four stars is that I feel strongly that this book would benefit from a male reader for the male voice as is done in the Wheel Of Time series. Though this reader does a great job with character separation.
Don't let other reviews about bad narration prevent you from getting this book. It's a fabulous story and I personally enjoyed the narrator. I did listen to a sample before purchasing since I was concerned based on all the other reviews. Definitely worth a credit!!
I generally shy away from fiction regarding theology however it was not hard to distance myself from that portion of the story. Really the only thing that was familiar from religion were the names of the characters and places.
It was a typical love story with a few fantasy features thrown in. Boy meets girl - lots of angst and misunderstanding - love and goodness prevails.
The narration was flat, colourless and great to fall asleep to. I actually fast forwarded some parts.
Having said that I will probably read the next in the series one day, as I will recall it as a harmless non thought provoking read. If I do read another I hope the narrator lifts her enthusiasm for the story. Either that or it will be another book to go to sleep with.
This book was a fun read, even if it was fairly predictable. I knew what trope-tastic things were going to happen, but it was an enjoyable journey thanks to Shinn's descriptive and engaging writing. I really liked this first book, but as the rest of the series seems like stand alone novels set in the same world, I may have to pass on finishing the rest of the books.
I enjoyed this book, with just one little quibble. The heroine was just too contrary and it occasionally got annoying. Towards the end, I just wanted to shake her and tell her to stop being so self-absorbed.
I have loved the Samaria books for a very long time. The only thing missing in the audio books is the music and songs....lol. I know it is VERY unrealistic to say that, even wish for it...I had to put it out there.
This book went on and on and on. I kept thinking it would surely be over soon and it was like the energizer bunny - it just kept going and going! I had the plot figured out and it all fell into place as expected. I liked the character, Gabriel, but had a hard time liking Naomi. I get that she has had a hard life and bad things happened, but she just never once bent even a little, and everything had to be on her terms.....to use a cliche, her way or the highway. I felt sorry for Gabriel and kept thinking he could surely find someone better than Naomi and wished that he had. I felt like he deserved better.
The premise behind the book is what drew me in and at first, I really liked the world created by Shinn. By the end of the book, not so much. There was too much of a gap - both socially and politically - between the angels and the other people and the angels were not very nice as a whole. Actually, there weren't very many nice people or situations in this book at all; therefore, before I get super negative, suffice it to say that I will not be reading the rest of the books in this series and I am glad that this one was purchased on sale and not for full price.
I could not even finish this audio. I am the type of person who has to finish everything no matter what and I did not even get thru the 1st part. I was disappointed by the reviews. This book is about a slave girl (who was only a slave for the last 5 years of her life) she is bitter and hates all. She has to marry an archangel. Who they dont even try to get along and do everything to stay apart. The archangel tries but Rachel does everything to keep her distance but comes on to another archangel. That is as far as I could get and had to stop. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON THIS AUDIO.
