I would not listen again. I am hooked on Harry Hole. But this narrators id dreadful, He even gave Muller--Harry's boss--a fake southern accent. It was all I could do it get through the recording.
The Christmas scene, a very brief moment of happiness in Hole's chaotic life was great,.
Beats me. Who reads printed books when there's Audible?
Harry Hole. Thor evokes a slightly different mental impression of Harry than does Robin Sachs, but it is nonetheless an excellent performance.
I almost passed this book by, based on other reviewers' comments about Thor Knai's performance. Then I listened to the sample. That sounded fine to me, so I took a chance and bought the book. Man, I am glad I did. Thor does a great job. I wonder if the critical readers had come to identify Robin Sachs as the voice of Harry Hole, and would have objected to ANY other narrator.
Speaking of different narrators, Robin Sachs pronounces Harry's last name as the word "hole" would be pronounced in English. Thor Knai pronounces it as "hoo-le", two syllables. I sure don't speak Norwegian, but - do they really have silent "e"s? I'm betting Thor's is the more correct rendering. The pronunciation feature of Google Translator supports this notion.
Great story as usual, on a par with Jo Nesb??'s other Harry Hole books.
If you've listened to any newer Nesbo books, do NOT go back and listen to this one. The storyline was pure and perfect Nesbo but the narrator was so bad, I could never tell who was talking to whom. This is a definte book to read, unless it is re-recorded with the current narrator of Nesbo's books. BUY the book, it is a great story although I deeply regret spending the money to listen to it.
This is not a police procedural. It a model for the nuanced plot, refined with subtle observation and an exceptionally flawed protagonist. Harry Hole is evocative of Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther, Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander, Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch (in the early books). Mysteries are more than satisfactorily solved; and the solutions then unravel. Clues are many faceted and never clear cut.
There is only one problem for audible members. If you listen to Nemesis, you will become hooked. Audible, however, has only one book in the series. The unsolved mystery is: why one Nesbo novel when the one is a masterpiece?
Don't miss the Bino Phillips series by AW Gray. They are largely unknown, but as good as any ive read!
This is an astonishingly good mystery. It's true the reader is vastly different than the other Harry Hole books, but Thor Knai is no slouch.
His character voices seem inconsistent applied to various characters.
Is the name pronounced Hole, Holey, and Hula? 3rd book, 3rd different pronunciation.
Please do not listen to the negative narrator reviews or you'll be missing a great book. I agree the narration by Thor Knai is poor but after about an hour you get used to him. In fact I found a couple of his accents pretty hilarious. At one time he comes out with an attempt at a Norweign accent that sounds like the Kentucky hills. The book is a great listen however and Jo Nesbo is at his best. The plot is typical Nesbo with twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end.
I would not recommend this book because of the narrator.I'm a big fan of Jo Nesbo's work but I have no idea if the story is any good because i could not listen beyond three chapters.
I would have found someone who knew how to narrate an audio book
Robin Sachs. Even though Knai knows how to correctly pronounce the author's name and Harry Hole's as well, he's far from the reader Sachs is. It's too bad Sachs didn't take the trouble to find out that Hole is not pronounced as it is in English (at least according to Nesbo himself).
Never listen to a book narrated byThor Knai.
If I could only get my credit back for this one.
Yes to another by Nesbo. No to Knai.
The narration sounded like a Godzilla movie dubbed into English. It was distracting and made the dialogue sound cheesy.
I have read other books by Jo Nesbo and thoroughly enjoyed them. I'll give him another try as long as the narrator is different.
It could have been much better with a different narrater. This nartrater can not hold a candle to the two previous narraters of Harry Houle novels. His reading was so distracting that I stopped listening about a quarter of the weay through. This is the first time a reading was so bad that I could not finish listenuing.
