After reading so many glowing and positive reviews, I felt I had to add mine. The book is well writen but if you want action and adventure, then this is not for you. The cover is representative of nothing. And, to make matters worse, you will have to get the next book as this book has no ending.
As always Kim Harrison's world building skills are wonderfully displayed. This book is written from multiple personalities of various featured and main characters. There are not many characters in the entirety of the book, but each one was well written and understandable. I like the clever ways the author disguises snippets of importance that the reader can link together just before the characters catch on. The story is simpler in terms of complexity, but it has many enjoyable nuances. Overall a good read and a good performance by the narrator. I think if you have read any if the books with Rachel Morgan in the Hollows series by Kim Harrison you will enjoy this, even if it is shorter. There are many clues to the future that you will be waiting to fit together, something I really enjoyed from the Hollows series.
Unbelievable emotional dialogue from start to finish. Characters that overreact to each situation and then are immediately over their fight and in love again. I know it is easy for a guy who has never written a book to criticize, but this was a tough listen. Sadly, they sold me book two on sale, forcing the purchase of book one. Since I don't like to start in the middle I unfortunately paid full price for this. The next book was not much better. In the book's defense, I must say that its probably great for the intended audience which must be 12 year old girls and not 46 year old men. Can a fantasy writer please write a single story that ends without the need for 5,10, or 15 books?
this is a ok fantasy sometimes a bit predictable but its interesting enough for the first book in a series i would get the next
Professional Escapist and Self-Help Junkie. I have a background in the classics, but a love for fantasy, horror and science fiction
This is an original and entertaining start. There were a few points that I can't figure out. They Felt a little rushed...but it wasn't enough to keep me from thoroughly enjoying tis ride. I find myself looking forwards to the next one already!
That's my biggest worry for teen books, is it going to feel like twighlight? All pining, longing, misunderstood, you know, teenage hormones. But it wasn't at all. It held my interest all the way through, and I just bought the next book.
Nice low timbre with a distinct variation between characters while remaining comfortable
Alissa and Strall travel to The Hold to find the book First Truth
Myst/thrillers and ✨fun fantasies✨are my favorites but always open for a good story.
This is a great start to a new series. An interesting circumstance when a mother feels she has to send her daughter away from the safety and comfort of their home to embark on a quest to find her true calling and capabilities. The story has a lot of unfolding chapters for the main character. Her luck brings her a very loyal, traveling companion and they both have to be smart to avoid entities that would wish to harm them.
