I love this series and have both re-read and re-listened to all the previous books. However,(1) LM had so many story lines going at once, I stayed frustrated with all the interruptions to "peek" in on what's happening with other characters. (2) The two main characters must have had personality transplants because they were unrecognizable from the characters we came to know and love in previous books (3) the editing on the audiobook was awful. There are loooooong pauses and voice changes where , I'm guessing, errors were corrected. There were even a couple of places where ambient sounds were heard.
I have enjoyed the BDB series so much that it is difficult for me to critize anything J. R. Ward writes and I will continue to buy the BDB books. I just think that this time, the book did not live up to the hype.
Yet again, JR Ward has crafted an award winning story of the BDB. Every book gets me primed for the next. This one was intense and emotional, and oh so incredibly good. What's not to love about John Matthew? This brother will completely steal your heart. Everything about him says he is a 'male of worth'. I loved it.
I've always been a avid reader so now I'm a avid listener. I prefer the paranormal genre but I do like to switch things up. It's boring if you don't have variety. Of course I do love the romance and the hotter the better. Also, you can't beat a good thriller filled with suspense and a ending you can't even guess at until the very end.
John Matthew finally gets his girl. The one thing I do enjoy about this series is the continuing story of most of all the BDB characters. We keep riding along on this wave of intrigue, danger and lust. One book rolls right into the next and it's just awesome. It's a no brainer why I have to come back to this series and visit my favorite characters.
I have just finished this book in 2.5 days it was so good. I am on to the next but am a bit worried after reading some of the reviews, seems to have the least favorite reviews. I guess I will find out.
DOOP Philadelphia Union DOOP
This one was not so great. I had trouble finishing it and that's even with fast forwarding through the sex scenes.
The plot jumped around between three or four different story lines and was not difficult to follow, but it wasn't enjoyable the way it kept skipping around. The characters of John Matthew and Xhex weren't true to their characters in previous novels at all. A reviewer on Amazon said, "Complicated subplots" and it's true.
Jim Frangione is a decent narrator but there were HUGE gaps in time when he read and a few times I could hear the director or someone else in the background. That was actually kinda cool in a way though.
I think I'm going to stop listening to this series now. It's just not enjoyable to me anymore.
I like Jack Reacher style characters regardless of setting. Put them in outer space, in modern America, in a military setting, on an alien planet... no worries. Book has non moralistic vigilante-justice? Sign me up! (oh, I read urban fantasy, soft and hard sci-fi, trashy vampire and zombie novels too)
Okay... first thing, if you haven't read the rest of the series, do so now. And if you *have* read the rest of this series, you should be reading Lover Mine right now, not this review. Seriously. I'm not kidding. Go... now... get this book and read it.
It's a great story, with great characters (though it's much much better if you've read the other books 'cause the characters are fully fleshed by this installment). If you like vampires, sex, drama, suspense, and butt-kicking justice, you'll like this book. Period.
If you don't like any of that, you wouldn't have read any others in this series so won't be interested in reading this one either.
Otherwise, if you liked any of the BDB books, this is, by far, the best of the bunch. The narration is excellent.
I've never been interested in a vampire series until these books came out. I like everything about these books, and have a hard time picking a favorite. I have only bought the audio on the last two, but had to buy the books too. I have reread every book that is how much I enjoy this series. Kudos for J.D. Ward, looking forward to the 9th in the series and hopefully many more.
This books is sooo great that I listen to it in a day! LOve the storyline! I can't wait till book 9 come out! A year of waiting arggggg lol.
Jim frangione is the bomb I can't see anyone else reading BDB books!!!!!!
I"am will lisen to all the books again but please hurry up and bring book 9 out!
This was a good story about John and Zhex. I have to be honest, I was a bit turned off by the homosexual line that ran throughout this book. It just left me with a "ick" feeling. A few of the books have hinted in this way but this one was way too out there for me anyways. Other then that I enjoyed the story line and as always J.R. Ward puts out a great story.
LOVE English Bulldogs, Nelson Demille, Patricia Cornwell and just reading in general!
In the BDB series, it's my 3rd favorite, behind Z/Bella & Quinn/Blay
Xhex - Because she is such a tortured bad-ass with a tightly hidden vulnerable side.
Normally I really like it when the reader separates the characters by using different voices; but after listening to the previous books, I don't notice it as much, he's just a good smooth reader.
When JM found Xhex in her basement, the writing was so well done that I could picture her and how badly she looked and how much JM felt for her, it was very emotional.
I have to say, I was very happy when they finally got together and I'm glad that Xhex isn't going to become one of the "stay at home" shellan's That would not have done justice to her character. She and JM should get to do lots of fighting in the future.
