What started out immediately as an interesting premise with enormous possibilities all too soon devolved into a minute description of how a woman feels about everything, from seeing herself in a mirror the first time to becoming thirsty after breast-feeding. The plot dragged and any theme was soon lost. It became a chore to listen, and finally was laid to rest unfinished. An abridged version might work with significant editing.
Prolonged and disjointed historical journey.
Story line was awkward unlike other books by this author.
The torture scenes were irrelevant to story line.
This is one of my favorite author and probably my favorite narrator. Yet, this book gave me some mixed feelings because it was very sad. There were times I had to speed up the narration to end the overwhelmingly depressing scenes in the book. I must admit I got frustrated by the sequence of bad events throughout the story. The story and plot are solid in this novel; a good set of characters and very interesting with many well researched facts of the time and era of the story is impressive. I enjoyed the book and recommend to all listeners that enjoy long good books.
I really liked the length of the book -- it's good for long commutes. The story itself is in 3 distinct parts, related only by the fact that it contains Rosa, the main character is in all three. Loved the historical detail!
My favorite character was Rosa's husband Antonio, because he was solid and sensible and offered stability to the story.
I love anything Caroline Lee performs!
This is not a book for anyone with a weak constitution. Alexandra's intense descriptions of Fascist and Nazi atrocities had me nauseous and gave anxiety the entire time I listened to this book. The book needs a graphic disclaimer for the violence.
Excellent listening experience. I chose it because of the reader, Caroline Lee, who is my favorite. Now I will listen to others by this author. She is an excellent writer and storyteller.
The setting and time make this interesting and enjoyable. The time is World War II and the setting is Italy from the Italian view point.
I so enjoy Audible...helps me get my to-do list accomplished.
Alot to read and understand. ...but suspenseful and interesting. Will purchase another one of her novels.
What an amazing story. It had depth of character, many stories intertwined, and wonderful narration. This is the 2nd Belinda Alexandra book I've read. I loved it!
This book went into a lot of gruesome detail at times. It wasn't bad and narrator does an awesome job. I love her accent. It wasn't the worst listen but I would have skipped a lot if I were reading a hard copy.
This book takes you into the time between the 1st World War and the 2nd World War and then into the 2nd World War. However, this is not a war book. The book puts you into the life in Florence through the eyes and experiences of an orphan. There is also the mystery of where Rose came from that is slowly reveled through the book. This is a great read and I very much enjoyed it!
