This novel starts off better with a solid mix of action and romance--just what you expect. But it goes down hill about halfway through--the minute the heroic lovers descend into sappy declarations of eternal love and little high-school episodes of jealousy or social awkwardness that don't work for their characters at all. Oh, and the male lean needs a new name. Bones is unimaginative and silly.
She conveyed the voice and the sarcastic humor of the heroine rather well, but all the other accents in the dialogue, especially the cockney English of the male lead, were a sin. Just terrible.
The narration was ok apart from the british accent, not sexy British more like Eliza Dolittle before Dr Higgens taught her to be "My Fair Lady". The narrator should have just read it in her own accent it may have been better. It is nearly bad enough to make me want to not listen to any other books read by her.
Have already listened to this twice, just love it. Fresh approach to the subject with a strong (yet vulnerable) lead character who you can't but become fascinated by. It has everything, suspense, drama, romance, hot steamy parts, laugh out loud moments and plenty of action. Picked up a few extra things from the second time, and will without a doubt be listening again.
I was there with the character all the way. The journey was believable (if paranormal can be considered so), and taking the whole vampire thing out, it was also a great love story. I started straight into book 2 I was so hooked once this one ended.
She was able to distinguish the characters really well, making me forget that she was one person reading. Did take me a while to get used to Bone's accent though, at first it felt a little like a pirate vampire....

Great, Engaging, & Witty
I loved each of Cat's battles! I liked Stephanie, the college babe who kept a shotgun in her closet used to kidnap and serve up students for rent. Timmy and all the vampire targets were also fun. Don and Tate’s meeting with Cat in the hospital room was a perfect ending or beginning for book II.
Yes, Ms. Gilbert was exceptional in narrating “Enough” by Roger et al., but this was non-fiction, highly informative and meant for a different audience. Her performance reading this vampire story resulted in a search for other fictional books that are narrated by her. I really like her.
Cat's battles to find the blood sucker of her past.
I am dyslexic! If it wasn't audible I would not even be able to know what's in a book. I found out I love books.
loved it great story i would listen to it again
loved it great story i would listen to it again
Much more complex characters and storyline.
Dance with Dragons
Yes. The performance was pretty good, although I did not like that the vampire Bones had a cockney accent.
It was not a complete duplicate of the other vampire novels I've read...
The book was very poorly written. The characters were very artificial. I could not relate to them at all which is not a problem I usually have when reading. When I finished the book I honestly went to check to see if this was written by a high school student because the characters seemed to lack realism and an emotion maturity you find in other well written books.
Seth like books. Books make Seth think of places Seth would much rather be. Dragons better than cars. More dangerous, but better.
Up until this point, I had yet to find a book that I couldn't make it though. By the end of the first hour I had decided I'd only listen to it for the "not to do's" of writing a story, such as cliched phrases and characters, but by half way through the book I just couldn't get through it.
Add all that to a narration that set my teeth on edge, especially her accent that she used for Bones and I really had to turn it off.
Hot romance/Sci Fi we're so lucky to have Audible to feed our book addictions. I love walking my precious dog Sydney & listening to my books
This book is exciting and very addictive from beginning to end. Top author with a fabulous imagination. I'll be listing to the rest of this excellent series. :)
The author does a great job of making this story of vampires believable and exciting. The conversations, drama, sex scenes, and fighting were balanced well. I would definitely try reading anything else she wrote.
The main characters, Cat and Bones, are flawed unforgivably by the narrators prepubescent voice. Cat, 22, sounds like a whiny 15 yr old and Bones, 200+, sounds like Kelly Osbourne. As for ALL the other characters... they all sound like a witch. Literally. Think of "hello my pretty" and you've got the voice of her mom, grandparents, and the ghost in the graveyard.
Now, the love story of the story is great for women who likes their boyfriend to be the opposite of a gentleman. For example, after they declare their love to each other he "roughs her up" so she can play the part of a drug addict. Since when do drug addicts look bruised and broken? Bones consistently puts Cat in mortal danger and nothing is thought of it by either character. He uses her as bait to lure other dangerous vampires and she gets hurt every time but neither one thinks twice about her safety. Its weird. But I try to appreciate if for being different.
My best advice, read it instead of listen to it.
One of the best series, I've ever heard! I have since started to read the books and am even getting around to reading shorts that Jeaniene has written.
For those who get a kick out of English Accents, this book has two great accents.
Tavia's Bones (Crispin) is just great! I got a kick out of Spade's (Charles) accent too. For those who didn't get the accents - I'm fron London, England and I found Bones' accent authentic. The changes of accent were really good.
Jeaniene Frost is a fantastic writer, but I have found other authors that i have loved and the narration has ruined the book for me.
Please don't change this narrator - she does an excellent job.
Jeaniene can't wait for the next book!
