I really enjoyed all the facts and the insight to a lot of troubles that people have trying to lose weight, I could really relate to it.
No, I listened to this over a period of time, a few days.
This book is filled with a extreme amount of information that I feel many more people should find out about. I believe wholeheartedly that Dr. Furhman knows his stuff and I love how this book really confirms many of my own beliefs.
The idea and science behind this book are great. But the question is how can one really follow it? To follow the principles of this book one would have to become a vegan (not even a vegetarian).
This book has transformed the way I live, eat, and feel. I can't thank Dr. Fuhrman enough for that. I was not overweight and didn't have any major health problems when I started reading the book and following the author's suggestions. I had 15 pounds to lose to get down to the lower end of my ideal range. I had long suffered from the side effects of blood sugar swings--sluggishness, mood changes, and headaches.I started out as a cheese-loving, meating-eating, junk food addict, so I spent a month doing the Eat to Live program at about 50%. I felt so good when I was sticking to the diet that I decided I could definitely do it all the way. My headaches went away, I stopped feeling sluggish after meals, and I didn't experience those horrible blood sugar crash mood swings. After 3 weeks of mostly following the program (with occasional cheats like a beer on Friday night, etc), I've lost 5 pounds. Much more important though is that I feel better than ever. I have a steady stream of energy all day and I never get that horrible overly full feeling that comes from overeating addictive types of foods. Most of my junk food cravings have vanished. It was definitely hard at first, but the longer I eat this way, the more I find myself craving healthy foods. I've even started feeling repulsed by the idea of eating meat, which is a very unexpected side effect.I usually have a very large green smoothie for breakfast, some kind of bean soup for lunch, and then dinners vary. Fruit for snacks, occasional handful of raw nuts, etc. I put the flax seeds in my morning smoothie to be ground up and to make sure I remember to eat them every day.I will continue with this mostly vegan diet for the rest of my life, based on how good I have felt since making the switch. I've even stopped craving cheese, which is something I never would have believed before starting the program.
The hardest part has probably been learning a whole new repertoire of dinners to make, but it's been fun too. I bought the cookbook Veganomicon, and all the recipes I've tried in it have been delicious. For people unsure about their ability to switch to eating this way, I say give it a try for two meals a day for a while and see how it goes. Or try it all the way but keep it simple--having a huge salad for dinner requires little creativity or effort and will fill you up until bedtime.
Understanding that 500 calories of vegetable matter fills your stomach so you are full and satisfied whereas processed foods, refined foods, oil or animal protein in the same calories does not fill your stomach. This principal became a no brainer for me and I feel great.
Say something about yourself!
I think this is a very healthy and satisfying way to eat. Even if you do not follow the plan 100 percent, there is much to be learned from this great book.
The one thing I've taken away from this book is that we, as a general population, eat mostly processed foods. Basically, the foods are stripped of their original nutrition and then colors, flavors and unhealthy fats and sodium are added. We've become so used to eating this way, we've accepted diet-related illness as a fact of life.
I feel this book is worth the read. I've learned a lot from this book. Healthy choices are so much easier now.
The information in this book is fantastic, and it is definitely worth a listen, but the charts, recipes, and other helpful stuff you would get in a paper-book are not included. Instead Fuhrman tells you to visit his website and join his 'community' - for the low cost of $40/year - or $100/year if you want to post on the forums. Really, Joel?
I've been following the diet plan in this book for the past 2 and a half weeks. I've already lost 11 pounds and I feel great. I have a lot more energy, motivation, and my clothes fit better. This is the definitive diet book!
The core information presented by Dr. Fuhrman is excellent. Sadly, it is "padded" with pages upon pages of "filler" information that can cause the listener to doze off. This is the first audiobook ever I had had to fast forward through to get to the valuable data I seek.
The Atkin's Diet - NOT because of it's core, but because we again hear refined grains and sugars are evil (true). I have used a self-modified Adkin's diet to great effect and Furhrman seems to agree with my findings that most of Adkin's can be dangerous. However, avoiding processed carbs is the core of both plans.
Dr. Furhman may know his stuff, but his reading skills can be a bit jarring. He often will studder when reading his own words (not because of a disability) he will loose his place or seem to pause at times as if unfamilar with the book he wrote. I believe he wrote it, but someone else should have read it.
I recently have had a hard time loosing weight. I was heavy as a child and have kept weight off for over 20 years with a few periods where I would pack on 10-15 pounds and nothing seemed to take it off and/or my body was simply adding weight with the same diet that it had maintained a healthy weight at for some reason (stress?) This book is my plan to get back on track. Sadly, when you put on weight you get depressed so you get stressed so you stress eat and a "circle" is created. It must be broken.
I think Dr. Furhman could have gotten the key information needed by most listeners into a 1-hour recording and done much better at communicating the key data. I don't cook so I don't need the recipes other talk about. I do need reminders of what to avoid and what to eat much more of.
This was such an informative book, I could not stop listening.
Dr. Fuhrman explained things in such a simple logical way.
Emotion, Motivation, and Grace!
Yes is was, I could not stop listening!
It is so inspiring to know that there is REAL hope despite what all the fad diets say. This book really is not about a diet as much as it is about education. Dr. Fuhrman teaches you how to eat and live a health life.
Honest, Difficult, Works!
This book is about tough love, if you really want to lose weight and improve your health, then follow the book and you will drop a huge amount of weight. I didn't need to lose a big amount of wight but its works well for me also. If you're so big that you can't exercise, then this is the eating program for you.
The book is a progression of information you need to understand in order to understand the process and to make the commitment. But towards the end it spells out the various plans need to lose weight.
No No ...... I can't eat another thing......
If you like salads and steamed vegetables, you can't eat too much. Personally I like the fruit servings (4 per day), the small portions of nuts and the various recipes which reinvent food choices.
