I have enjoyed this book. It is a lively story with good character development. It was a fun read.
To me this series had a lot of potential, but the main character never really became a real hero. He was always beat down and never got back up. Right when you think he was about to reach his full potential he's beat down even worse. I really had to make myself get the 3rd installment of this series, because I really wanted to quite after the 2nd.
The whole series is a one side perspective with no insight onto the other characters views. So when the main character was wrong about someone, (which he was quite often) we never really understood any of the other characters.
I wouldn't recommend this series to anyone.
I gave Hobb a second chance with this book. I read shammans crossing and the forest mage. and didnt like it. no action...and hoped there would be some kind of action in this book. and no, i didnt get it. Hobb tells a good story. but no action. no wars...no fights to but you at the edge of your seat. Good story telling...but the story is boring
Simple put, the plot was awful and main character was a wimp and spent the entire story getting beat down and berated and never fights back. I give it one star simple because this collection of words did create a story.
I was excited to read this series because it's very high in many of the top 100 best fantasy books. It was very well writen but dragged on and their never was a "wow!" factor. I agree that the main character was very boring and unskilled, and never learns his skills. He is someone that you never really learn to like, just a bit of a village idiot the whole series. Then the whole series ends just like that, the whole plot line is solved, their is no closure. I was very dissapointed. Wouldn't recommend this series...
I really wanted to like this book, but in the end I just couldn't finish it.
The book started out slowly for me, almost too slowly, I almost stopped at that point. Once I made it through the first several hours I found myself enjoying the story. Unfortunately, my first instincts were accurate and I was unable to continue, it completely lost my attention with about 4-5 hours left.
I think what ruined it for me was the character development. I just couldn't see this poor pathetic boy (Fitz) turning into an assassin.
