This is a wonderful story and a perfect beginning to a very good shifter series. I love the details and backstory for this particular shifter world.
This is the best shifter series I have read. Mary Cakmes L'ange series is also great as is Rack and Ruin if you like suspense M/M shifter tales.
The story is great and listening to it is mostly enjoyable except for any distinct voices the narrator tried. Crane's voice is just awful and painful to listen to. Some of the interactions with Logan are disappointing because the narrator clearly didn't pre-read so he would say things loudly he was supposed to whisper or say things with no inflection that had great details about the way it should be have been said (like it should have been growled or yelled or seductively purred, etc.). I prefer no special voices if they are going to be distracting.
Jin is a fantastic character. He is very enthusiastic and snarky and just plain difficult and stubborn at times. I love his frustration over being claimed but also his loyalty to Logan despite his feelings of giving up on his freedom. I also love his relationship to his lifelong best friend Crane. Jin is just a cool character.
This is a terrific novel and worth a read and listen. You will HATE the narrator if you have ever read the book, but he will just irritate you at times otherwise. His enactment of Crane is truly terrible, but everything else is pretty well done. I have heard him on other novels and he has done much better. I wish there were a way he could redo those sections of this book.
I just finished the entire series and wish there were more books in it. It was such a great blend of everyday life and a totally different mystical world. I can't believe there are not more reviews on this series and that you Mary Calme fans haven't read it. I don't typically like blood and gore and there was enough action in this to make it riveting but not so much as to be disturbing. The series was awesome. The narrator for the first book was great. I didn't like the narrator of the 2nd and 3rd nearly as well. The last book's narrator was OK. I hope you will give it try. I listen to books for distraction and don't like very deep and intense. This series was perfect.
The Love that Logan has for Jin
When Jin took Logan's place in the pit
I like how he had different voices for each character
Jin and Logan Duh...
reading it make me smile...
I really enjoy the world of books! Narration just add layers to that world... don't u think? :)
I loved this book. Maybe b/c of Crisden's narration, but I really like Calmes as well. Crisden really brings out the cocky attitude of Calmes characters. I loved the whole paranormal shifter wold but I was a little nervous about the male/male love interest. But whatever to that! I love both of my ALPHA males...
This book was just great and Jin was just a great great character. He felt so real. I felt so sad for him about his family but now he belongs to Logan and YESSS to that... Right!!
I like all of the books by Mary Calmes and this one in no exception. My only complaint is about the narrator. He voiced the main character fine but several of the other secondary characters sounded like Muppets. I found the strange voices distracting and annoying. I'll never purchase an audio-book featuring this narrator again.
Probably. . . Usually listen more than once
When Jin finally accepted his destiny
Yes. . . He's great.
WHEN DESTINY CALLS . . . LISTEN
This book was a pleasant surprised. I was expecting the"were pack" thread to be a dressing to a m-m romance but it wasn't so. Calmes sensei actually has built a pretty solid world about were panthers in this book. To be honest, I think her were panther mythology and culture are much better imagined than some of the eroticas out there disguised as urban fantasies. And in that sense, if the reader is not familiar with weres and packs and what not in UF genre, one might get lost. Fortunately for me I am well versed in that kind of literature and had no problem understanding the were panther myth.
This could have been just a story of hot guys destined to mate meet, have sex and happily ever after. It isn't. It is also about accepting and being accepted who you are and fighting to be yourself. I'm extremely happy to find that there is actually an sequel
As for the reader...there is one voice that sounded like Grover from Sesame Street that was annoying but for the main couple I did not have any problem.
Oh in addition the name of the main character is Jin as in Jinnai a Japanese name(mother is Japanese) which is a nice bonus
I really liked this book to my suprise! I have a tendency toward books 100 years old or older, so hearing a modern novel was fun. I just finished Maurice, and gay romance stories have certainly got hotter! I loved Maurice as it is so romantic, but this book is romantic and hot all at the same time. Add paranormal werepanthers and you have a good story. I hope she makes a sequel! I also wished lesbian novels were more fun, I am a gay women and we need stories like this one too!!!
! Love to listen to jazz, r/b and listen to erotic or a good paranormal sci-fi and " good narration is everything"
It's a shame his whole family and tribe whom he loved with his whole heart and they loved him until the day he told them he was "GAY and a Reah!" so much hate so much pain so scared, only one stay true when true love gasp his heart DRAMA DRAMA and some fun too and definitely some hot hot sexual scenes. I DEFINITELY WILL BE READING THE OTHER BOOKS
