Good story. Cute YA read.
No. But i know it has one so oh well.
Ditch the music!
Intense annoyance and disappointment.
I should start off by saying I am not picky about my books. My tastes are all over the map and it is rare that I despise a book so much that I can not even finish listening to it, but this one grated my nerves with each passing minute. The narrators southern accent was ridiculous and the music that kept playing was more than I could take. I have been told by several friends who actually read the book that the story was good but for me the audio version was so bad I could not even finish it.
Kevin Collins was great. I usually don't enjoy audiobooks with male narrators but he was fantastic! I definitely recommend it and cannot wait to start on the next one in the series.
He didn't get in the way of my own perception of the characters the way a lot of narrators do. He drew me into the personality of Ethan and.. oh yes... Amma...What a character!
Not really. This book is right in my wheel house and I fully expected to love it. However, I found that I couldn't connect to the two main characters or their love story. I just never got invested in their love and it never felt quite authentic to me. Also, the entire book was spent waiting for one event to happen. I found myself wishing the book would just end so I could stop waiting to a series of non-events. I felt like this book needed a second act. I felt like Lena's birthday should have happened half way through the book, and the second half of the book should have been dedicated to a new event or conflict. I wanted to love this book, but found myself bored.
Also, the writing style was not as rich and descriptive as I usually read, so even the text was not engaging.
I'm not sure. There is a morbid curiosity in me that wonders what the second book is like and if there is any improvement in the pacing and story telling. The end of book one was not encouraging as it seems that book two might just be another long wait for Lena to turn 17.
None really stand out more than any other. I suppose the final climax, just because something was finally happening.
It already has been.
I was disappointed.
I am a book worm and writer trapped in a dyslexic's body
Trying to ignore the aggravating voices and infuriating accents, the fantasy has a clever plot, great characters, and a romance that isn't too cheesy. However, it would seem that the characters were ment to be intelligent and strong willed, not air-headed and soft as Mr. Collins so reads them. If you are at all able, read the book with your own to eyes. This performance is bad enough to ruin the otherwise enjoyable story.
All of the above.
I listened to this book in anticipation of the movie, which ended up never showing in my town. Now that I have seen the DVD version, I'm highly disappointed with it. READ/LISTEN TO THE BOOKS! It is sooooo much better. The audio version paints a clear picture in your head and adds the sound effects which make it more descriptive. The movie left out probably half of the book, left out a character, and even combined 2 characters into 1. I'll stick with listening to the series rather than waste my money to see the movies, if any more even get made. Movie version get a 1 or less, book/audio version gets a 5+.
This is a good story, interesting characters, and unpredictable
I loved the performance of this book! He really brought me in to the book. The sound effects were outstanding and added to the performance.
One of my favorite audiobooks! I am in my fifties, female, loved this for my commute!
Proud book worm!
This is up with my favorite reads!!! It is well written and draws you in!!! So much better then the movie!!!
Kevin T. Collins brings so much life and mystery with every inflection of his voice. He knows how to make characters stand out and you know who is speaking with the range he has!
You know what I mean by books being better then the movies. If you watched the movie, be ready to be surprised....the book is vastly better then the movie!!!!
I enjoyed this story largely in part because of the interweaving of past and present and the use of the civil war as a back drop. It isn't just another teen vampire or witch story. You really start to like most of the characters in the book, especially Lena and Ethan. The supporting characters are interesting and more than a little complex which adds dimensions to the story line.
I really enjoyed this book. The only thing I have to complain about is all of the background noise. I do not mind a little suspenseful music from time to time, but I just felt that there were a few too many sound effects added in this recording. I will listen to it again despite the sound effects as I really liked the story and am sure I missed a few things.
