I purchased this audio thinking I would enjoy another Swedish author's work but...this book is boring, disconnected and barely has a thread of story throughout. I thought the narrator annoying at times. The whole Chinese history lesson seemed tedious. I don't know if I disliked the book because of the narrator or disliked the narrator because of the book's plot!
It's as if the author had a great idea for a story beginning, then couldn't figure out how to continue. The African conspiracy is absurd, the police and prosecutor dismissing the evidence the judge brings to their attention defies credulity, the ancient Chinese sayings are weak, and the nostalgia for Chairman Mao gets real old. Was my first Mankell read, and didn't encourage me to read any more.
So Mankell can write stories other than Wallender. It is a good read with a wonderful female heroine. The plot at times is a little far-fetched and one must allow the suspension of disbelief but overall a worthwhile hearing.
I couldn't stop listening to this book. It was very good. Once again, it was adventurous, some historical content, and just all around enjoyable. I learned about a people who were not treated the best upon entering this country. In fact they were not treated to well in there country. It was interesting to learn their perspective about our customs and culture. I really enjoyed the book and have listened to it two times already.
Retired autoworker, and photographer! Started to listen to audio books, when I developed cataracts, and never stopped! Love the listen!
Don't let the gruesome beginning keep you from continuing on with this book. You will travel around the world from the 1800's to the present. I know I will reread this book many times!
Bought this book because of the famous Swedish series about the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". This is also a Swedish mystery but that is where the comparisons end. Its a nice story but is a slow moving mystery that is a bit longer than it needs to be. The reader is awesome.
Very exciting, so many different lives that all come together at the end. Enjoyable.
My least favorite of Henning Mankell. Unbelievable story. Characters are cartoon like, No suspense. Very disappointing
The arthor has some very interesting "insights", "theories" of China politics. I was quite surprised and interested as I listened. I really enjoyed this book.
