I really liked this book! The opening chapters made it seems like a murder mystery but it was soooo much more than that! It traces a random path over continents and time that makes you realize that people do things for strange reasons. While I thought some things were unbelieveable the more and more Mankell blended the story I found myself getting into it! loved it!
I was tempted to download "The Man from Beijing" when it was first released on Audible, but I wasn't sure if this was a story I would enjoy. Then last week during my lunch hour, I picked up a copy of the book and started reading it. I was immediately hooked. I went home that evening and downloaded this exciting novel. This is probably the best audio book I have listened to this year. I highly recommend it.
I couldn't stop listening to this book. It was very good. Once again, it was adventurous, some historical content, and just all around enjoyable. I learned about a people who were not treated the best upon entering this country. In fact they were not treated to well in there country. It was interesting to learn their perspective about our customs and culture. I really enjoyed the book and have listened to it two times already.
Retired autoworker, and photographer! Started to listen to audio books, when I developed cataracts, and never stopped! Love the listen!
Don't let the gruesome beginning keep you from continuing on with this book. You will travel around the world from the 1800's to the present. I know I will reread this book many times!
Bought this book because of the famous Swedish series about the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". This is also a Swedish mystery but that is where the comparisons end. Its a nice story but is a slow moving mystery that is a bit longer than it needs to be. The reader is awesome.
My least favorite of Henning Mankell. Unbelievable story. Characters are cartoon like, No suspense. Very disappointing
So Mankell can write stories other than Wallender. It is a good read with a wonderful female heroine. The plot at times is a little far-fetched and one must allow the suspension of disbelief but overall a worthwhile hearing.
The arthor has some very interesting "insights", "theories" of China politics. I was quite surprised and interested as I listened. I really enjoyed this book.
