I read somewhere they found this unfinished under his bed after he died. I can believe that. It's a good decent read. But not as good as I've come to expect from him.
a Tech Exec who loves the stories about what could be and what should have been. Mixed with histories told from an outside perspective.
The overall plot is a great swashbuckling tale with most of the book fast paced. You can tell at times this was writting by multiple authors, without colaboration to the end. Some may have been there, but there is a disjointedness at times. I think if you removed the otherworldly elements it would be a very consistant story, or if you enhanced them and reduced the historical referances it would also be enhanced. But, I do think overall it was a fun read and not a waste of money.
I really enjoyed this book and kept finding myself lookinf for excuses to do something where I would be able to listen to an audio book.
I think this must have been a first draft that they dug out from Crichton's desk after he passed away. Shallow characters, weak plot, and unpolished writing. I love Crichton, but this was awful.
It is a truly dismal when as fine a writer as crichton drops down to barely readable. Granted this is an enormous change from most of his previous science fiction based work. But it is nonetheless shocking that he can produce a novel so distinctly inferior to previous work. There is a little originality here and there, but much of this book falls into the category of naval fiction, in which many other writers have distinguished themselves to a far greater degree. This book wasn't so bad that I stopped listening to it, but if someone had told me ten years ago that this is where michael crichton would have ended up, I wouldn't have believed them.
I wanted to be entertained and I was. It was fast paced and actually kind of fun to listen to. It was outlandish in places but I was not expecting something factual. I probably would have given it 3.75 stars instead of 4 but all in all... good listen.
This is not a story for anyone looking for romance, or deep concepts. It is a little slow to start but very fast paced once it gets going, and is full of action and just pirate stuff. Give it a shot.
Immeasurably more enjoyable than any of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Not the best Chrichton novel, but certainly not the worst (see Next). Pure fun that will have you searching for more pirate novels.
After reading that this was found on his hard drive after his death, I went into it not expecting much, but was happily surprised. Like most of his novels, it was easily seen in my minds eye. Full of action and good twists, I was excited to see what would happen next and stayed in the car a few extra minutes to find out. Overall it was a good story and flowed well. It is not his best, but worth listening to. The reader also did a fine job to keep my interest. Would give it 3.5 stars. Will likely make a good action movie.
For the most part I enjoyed the book, but it constantly jumped from one unbelievable situation to the next. It's almost as if the stories were intended to be used in a serial and they all got shoved under one cover to get them published.
