Love the setting, the content, the period and the writer. If you like Pirates you will love this book.
I have enjoyed many of Michael's books, but I understand why this was left unpublished on a disk drive. This should have never been published using his name to sell this rag. What a joke of foolish situations and constant ridiculous happenings. I had to finish just to see how many more absurd things could happen. I wasn't dissapointed.. It kept getting worse.
Stay away.. the Kracken might get you.
This book was no better than ordinary for the genre and well below MC's usual level. The plot & characters were predictable. The narrator added to the mediocrity which surprised me, as would have expected someone with a greater capacity to bring life to characters to be chosen for a book by Michael Chrichton. I gave it 3 stars, but only because it's nearly Christmas.
I wish I had read the other reviews before selecting this one. I just love adventure on the high seas and had never read Crichton. My local paper gave it rave reviews and I was looking forward to listening to it. Thank goodness it's not that long or I could have never finished it. I thought the reader did a terrible job. His voices were terrible and he somehow dragged. Almost like the old cassettes when you're battery was running low. No part of it was exciting, not even the sea battles. The sea monster was ridicules. I was so disappointed.
The raunchy nature of it. It didn't give pirates this sort of glossy, romantic image; it felt more true to their the realities of the time.
There were a bunch. Whereas with most stories, the main goal is established and the rest of the book is spent seeking to accomplish said goal, this one achieves goal resolution in the middle of the book leaving the reader guessing for the entire remainder of the book while it covers the return journey. Most books don't cover return journeys, so that in itself was pretty fun.
Probably the Kraken
We futz ta get crunk yo ho!
This is just a really fun book.
I don't know if this book qualifies as the cheesiest book of all time, but it certainly is the cheesiest book written by a "best selling author". It seems I only review books I dislike, but this book really pissed me off (sorry). "Cheesy"says it all.
If you like pirates and the idea of an old swashbuckling story - this book is great.
It's fairly predictable, if not unbelievable at times. When the situation is completely hopeless and there is no way out - something fantastic happens and the hero is miraculously saved - very Indiana Jones. Far fetched - but fun.
It's a very enjoyable listen and fun adventure.
