I will keep this short. I loved this book because it took me on a really wild ride with Roland, Jake and the the black wizard stalking him...or that Roland was stalking. I'm still not sure. Anyway, King outdid himself in this book and I am harsh on his other novels. I don't know why I did not review this earlier. Probably still pondering Roland's complete psychosis, parallel worlds, strange deserts and underground freaks.
If it were possible to give this book less than one star, I would. I certainly would not recommend it. The story is all over the place. I had a hard time following the book or understanding its point. Character development is poor. I have put up with this book for 5 hours of listening time and I doubt I will finish it. I have listened to several King books and enjoyed them a great deal. This one just wasn't worth the effort.
The Dark Tower series is superb. When I read it the first time, I was depressed when it finally came to an end. The second time through, The Gunslinger is still a great read.
This is a mediocre start, I liked it, but not enough to make me want to read the other books. If my parents hadn't bought me the first three books--years ago, I never would have gotten into them. The story doesn't get good until the second book. This is one of the very first books he has written, and he has grown alot since then. This is the best series I know, and I read alot. Think of this one as an introduction to the real story that begins in the second book.
My favorite Stephen King novel yet! Incredible storytelling and an over the top imagination combine with an incredible reading to make this an incredible novel. Listened to it on a trip and it was over before you knew it and left me ready for the sequels!
Stephen paints vividly once again with his prose. I found myself re-listening to parts of this novel, each time getting a clearer picture. Almost waking in the morning and shaking the bleary blurred quality of my vision.
Real life can be boring sometimes, and that's when I pick up a book (or my mp3 player) :-D
This book isn't that great. The narrator is good but the story is eh.... It isn't until the very end that you learn what the series might be about. Having said that, I'm in the middle of the third book and I love the series so far. The second book is amazing so don't let a cruddy opener keep you from continuing on with the series.
