Was looking forward to the whole series. Sadly I was put off by the first book. Just couldn't get involved in the story. Too many flashbacks and odd offshoots. Oh well. Still love Stephen King. Just not the Dark Tower Series.
I couldn't finish it. It lost me and was boring. I really wanted to like it but I just could not get into it.
I really really really really tried to listen to this book and hope that I would just love it but I just did not enjoy this audiobook at all. I am a huge Stephen King fan but I really wanted to get started on read/listening to the Dark Tower Series but after Volume 1 I just dont think i want to read/listen to the rest. But I will definately re-listen to it again some time and hope that it works out better for me.
Anyway you look at it, Stephen King is a strange bird but some of his stories are beyond great. Sadly I hated this one. Actually kept listening just hoping it would get better. Needless to say I won't be listening to any more in this series.
I just finished the last book of the series and am looking back on the Gunslingers story at the beginning. This first book is a humble beginning to what becomes an incredible and rich tale. But though the book is humble in relation to the larger story, it is still filled with interesting characters and a compelling line. It is a very appropriate and well done start.
George Guidall, the narrator, took some getting used to. But after a little while I was really enjoying his reading. I especially like his voice for the Gunslinger.
Thanks again Steven for giving us a peice of your mind and soul. The first time I heard this, I thought it was going to just be a western book, but discovered to my surprise and satisfaction, that it was much more than that. Thanks again for the Dark Tower Series. They are the greatest.
Slow starter, once the story gets rolling you can instantly tell its one that will keep rolling for awhile. Profound and almost philosophical at times, the narration was perfict for the gunslinger and you really get the feeling that that would be the voice of the gunslinger if he had one. (At least I did) loved it another King masterpiece
Enjoying audiobooks daily!
I will keep this short. I loved this book because it took me on a really wild ride with Roland, Jake and the the black wizard stalking him...or that Roland was stalking. I'm still not sure. Anyway, King outdid himself in this book and I am harsh on his other novels. I don't know why I did not review this earlier. Probably still pondering Roland's complete psychosis, parallel worlds, strange deserts and underground freaks.
