I listened to this nonstop for two days and finished it. Was simply amazing. I listened to it again on the way back from South Carolina with my girlfriend. She loved it as well.
The narrator couldn't be better. The story is so full of detail about the gunslinger world and every character is brought alive in the fullest possible way by the narrator.
I am on book 2 and listened to just a brief minute of it and cannot understand why they switched narrators when Frank Muller is so amazing already. I cannot wait til the later books when he comes back to read. It seems sort of jarring to get used to the gunslinger sounding a certain way and then to change it.
Nevertheless I am totally hooked to this series right now and you should definitely check it out!
As boring as this book was, when compared to King's others, I really enjoyed it. I actually can't wait to start the second one now. This series definitely has potential...
This is actually only the second Stephen King book I've read/listened to, but with the depth of planning and the universe he's weaving in this first book of the Dark Tower series, I'm dying to listen to the rest. The best I can say is it is a splendid hybrid of chivalric intentions and western gunslingers - the world is extraordinarily explained through King's story mechanisms and brings about a weird psuedo-familiarity with genre that keeps you engaged and pondering what actually is happening the whole time. Flawed heroes, dark choices and the hero's unswerving devotion to his cause brings forth a adventure you can't wait to unveil throughout the reading.
This is a great introduction into the world of The Dark Tower series. I have tried to start this series before, but had little time to read it. I finished the audio book in two sittings and was ready for more. I bought the remainder of the series and can't wait to resume the story!
If you can make it through this book you are in for a great ride. An all time great epic with a poor start.
Be patient and read the 2nd book before you give up.
I read half the books in this series and listened to the other half in 2003/2004..
Now I am collecting all the audible books in the series and intend to start from the beginning. I know I missed a lot of it..
I love this series.. and think this is King at his finest..
The first book in an epic series, it takes off to a rather slow start as you are first introduced to Roland, last of the Gunslingers, wandering across his world, which has moved on. The book takes on a surreal feeling as though Stephen King doesn't exactly know which direction he's taking the story, merely free writing the entire title. For this reason, I give it a three star rating, as it is rather uninspiring to listen to it on it's own. However, should you continue to follow the story of the Gunslinger over the next several books, you'll realize the connections King has initiated with this book to the later titles, and come to appreciate it. In all, if you're willing to commit to the series and purchase all the books, you'll enjoy this title. If you're reaching out of your normal genre for something new, I would recommend purchasing books one and two together, as the second book is where the story really begins to shine and come together.
