This is the future and the future is now. The Long Tail puts it all in to perspective for business, small business and especially online business. Forget about the old rules of big hits and dumping inventory that doesn't turn 20 times a quarter. I also love the cultural observations. It's all in this book.
I am absolutely impressed by Chris genius point of view of the future of retailing. The book is nicely structured; the author provides different applications of the theory, which bridged theory and reality.
This book puts to rest the 4 years of marketing I studied in college. BUT, it brings my understanding of effective marketing into the 21st century. A great read, and well-narrarated!
A very interesting audiobook with just one flaw - because it largely draws upon technology and related businesses for its subject matter, it is already slightly dated. This is one of those books that would benefit from an update, not because anything in it is necessarily wrong, but because things in this sphere just move so quickly. For example, MySpace, which is mentioned excitedly in the book, is now a dying website...
I thought I knew a lot about "the long tail". My horizont just got mindblowingly wider. Makes you look at business in a totally new way - even if you are in the offline world.
I downloaded (for free, of course) & listened to FREE: A Radical New Price first & then bought this book. Proof that Chris's point of view on the new pricing model is right on! Long tail has some great insights on the entertainment & artistic businesses.
Excellent book on how the internet fundamentally changes economics. Great insight and solid narration. I had minor quibbles - having worked in the music industry and spent time looking at BigChampagne, I disagree with the implication that the hits have given way to a mass wave of indie bands - but overall it's very insightful. Would purchase again.
This is a well written book that reveals the richness and variety of consumer tastes and how the internet is the ideal supply chain mechanism to meet their needs.
I thought this book has some interesting points about niche marketing that I shared with others along the way as I listened. I got a few points to think about for my own business.
