Quite a long story with many characters. Don't get lost and pay attention to the off shoots because in the end every detail is important. Enjoyed the narration by John Lee. His use of voice was great and really brought out each character. Coming back for the Three Musketeers by the same author and narrator.
Wonderful story that weaves in and out and ties all the loops at the end - you know - those stories that turn out to have way too many coincidences... but we love them anyway. While its hard to imagine anyone being able to pull off what he pulls off... without seeing his behind the scenes planning or work to make it happen... it's still an enjoyable tale of revenge.
John Lee was an excellent reader. Having never read the book, I loved listening to his pronounciation of the various languages which I could have never done by reading. I learned history and loved being drawn back in time. Good morals taught.
I highly recommend The Count of Monte Cristo! I just started a new job and it requires a 1 1/2 hour commute each day. Instead of resenting the driving time I'm finding myself enthralled and looking forward to my time in the car. Sometimes I have to sit in my car for 'just a bit longer' in order to listen to even more! The narrator is top notch and the story has really caught my interest. This is my favorite Audio Book to date.
Having read it almost exactly 50 years ago, I had an English teacher friend recommend that I listen to it. The narrator, John Lee, was again superb. Having listened to over a 100 books now, he remains the best reader I have heard. The plot the characters, and the wisdom are ageless. I found myself thinking about them each day, dreaming about them some nights and anticipating each chapter. My wife listened as well, and found herself even more enthusiastic than myself.
I downloaded this book because my daughter was reading it in school and I wanted to keep up with her and discuss it with her. She is still reading and I have finish and I was blown away. I ordered all the available DVD copies so I could compare the book. A true classic!! Hooked is what I am!! Long live the Count!!
I loved it. With the help of the narrator, I was able to get through all the French pronunciatons, which was difficult for me when I tried to read the book.
I love the narrator, the story and everything about it.
I forgot HOW DIFFERENT the book is from the movie. I read the book 20 years ago, but saw the movie a couple months back which prompted me to buy it here.... The book was fantastic. What a great and convoluted story. If I could give it more stars, I would. The length was criticized by some reviewers, but every word created a picture and I wouldn't want to eliminate one of them.
This is a fantastic audio version of this book. The book itself is so incredible, one must read/hear it to understand. The narrator for this version does an incredible job of differentiating between voices. His pace is steady and he has wonderful inflection and intonation. This has been a very pleasurable 47 listening hours. I was sorry to have it end.
