I was pleasantly surprised at how engaging the story & characters were and how well the book was written. The author's emphasis on the value of morals, honor, mercy and the value of human life during war and even in the face of a cruel enemy was simple yet profound. It seemed very timely with so much of what is going on in the world today and in the military. Although the book deals with serious and mature material the book lacked any major profanity which allowed me to enjoy it with my kids in the back seat. I look forward to the next book.
I loved the complete lost fleet series. The naration was good and the story even better. This is what I want in a good sci-fi book. If you like Honor harrington and old man's war than you are going to like this too. And it's nice that jack campbell does an intro on some of these books. Allthough he sometimes tend to give away some of the story to much ;-).
The overall series is ok but the author repeats himself constantly. Did I mention that he repeats himself. Each and EVERY book he retells the entire story from the beginning. That means that the first book is good and each one afterwords gets more frustrating. If he had cut out the repetitive parts the series would be much better and more cohesive.
The other thing about the series that I don't like is the way that the author wrote the 2 main female characters. They are uninspiring and many times I wanted to smack the author for the things that they said to the main character. I was at first glad to hear that the author had a female character in a strong role. But the bickering and in-fighting between the leads was horrible.
The reader is a good one.
All I can say is if you like space combat, this book may be for you. Just don't expect BSG type combat. This is considerably more realistic and slow compared to other SciFi combat. But just as exciting.
This is a great series that I have become hooked on. The only hard part is waiting for the next book.

I purchased the paperback edition of Dauntless and with limited time, could not really get into the story although the plot line was very promising. I now have the whole series and the story of “Black Jack” really comes to life with an excellent reading by Christian Rummel. For those interested in military science fiction, this series rates more highly with me than other better-known authors. It is always interesting to read the work of former military officers and especially those from the Navy. Somehow, life on starships seems to be an extension of life aboard a submarine, with its tensions and an added complication of civilians aboard. I enjoyed them so much that I have read them twice, just to make sure I had nodded off in my armchair but I hadn't.
Loved the main character, and the premise of the Arthurian hero back from the proverbial dead to save his people - but with the twist that his legend grew after his "death" into someone he really isn't. Great perspective on this classical twist.
Also, fantastic ship battles in space as it's never been told before - found that I was eagerly putting other downloaded books on hold to get the rest of the series. Highly recommended!
This is a quarter or a third of a novel at best. I wish I knew if it sleazy editors/publishers or the authors themselves that break up a single story into multiple books (that filled with needless trivia and detail) just to sell more units. This is just plain dishonest.
If you do decide to listen, make sure that you bank on buying at least 3 of the series in order to get a novel's worth. The story is not bad overall, I just hate being deceived.
Books are like air: I need them to live.
I didn't know what to expect but this book was fairly highly rated so I figured "give it a go." I LOVELOVELOVE this series. The story is very interesting, the characters are rich, diverse and unique, the conflict is multilayered and multidirectional. I think 5 stars should be reserved for only truly amazingly great works but 4 stars is not enough. I would prefer to be able to give it 4 1/2 stars. It is that good.
If you find cat and mouse type conflict fun and interesting these books are for you and this one starts it off with a bang.
