I have enjoyed previous James Lee Burke novels, but this one I liked less and less the more I listened. I gave it 2 stars only because I stuck it out to the end rather than quitting midway.
He uses a boat load of $10 words, but the descriptive passages seem so forced- like he was just trying too hard to make it literary. The narrator used different pitches for different characters, but the same slow, pretentious intonations for each of them. All the characters were confrontational and belligerent. I didn't find it plausable and don't recommend it!
the writing, the narration, the characters - all captivating and so far a grand experience...looking for more from both
I just loved this story. It captured my attention early on and just kept me focused to the end. I wish it just kept going. The characters were great and the narrator did a wonderful job with different voices representing the different characters. This is one not to miss.
I loved this story. The characters are human and deep and the story was wonderful. You cant beat this narrator, I couldnt wait for an excuse to keep listening to the story. Ive listened to many audiobooks and this has been one of my all time favorites.
Drove extra miles just so I won't have to stop the story. Burke is one of the best writers around, and Will Patton is one of the best narrators...
For one thing I couldn't tell one voice from the other from the narrator and the story line just dragged on too long. Too much detail not enough story.
Who-done-it? who cares? the story was difficult to follow and after a while I realized I did not care about any of the characters or what happened to them!
I really enjoyed the story after I got to the half way point. Will Patton's narration was good. Ending is not what I expected or hoped but overall it was not bad.
