This is my first Reacher, and I'm addicted! I thought the story moved along at a great pace, and had lots of surprises.
Hill's performance breaths life into every character, from the dulcet tones of female characters to the low and smokey voice of Finley each and every player is unique and felt appropriate.
Well, if you liked the television shows "A-Team" and/or "The Six Million Dollar Man", then you'll probably like Jack Reacher. But if you're more like most readers, with discerning tastes (which doesn't include a liking for heaping helpings of melodrama and "weekday-evening-drama" plot thinness), then you will probably want to look for something other than Jack Reacher.
Also, Lee Child's writing is amateurish and often times even quaint. It's also sometimes like he can't decide whether he is writing for kids, or for adults with blood lusts; it's either over the top with politeness, while at other times, it's loaded down with almost cartoonishly surreal bloody violence.
I became interested in the Jack Reacher books after I saw the movie. Got a few of them, listened to them, but had to stop after feeling like I had overindulged on candy corn and beer nuts.
And err, yeah, the references were intentional. The books are full of action, but a type of action that is both corny and nutty. To be gotten only if you find yourself stricken with said tastes.
Jack Reacher. He is the man. Clever. Tough. Has that I-don't-take-sh*t-from-anybody attitude, and I love that about him. I also love that Lee doesn't always give Reacher the easy way out. He doesn't let his main character off the hook in sticky situations. Reacher has to work and live his story, not just have it written for him. It's great!
I really enjoyed the characters, they are all interesting. Lee is great at giving everyone their own story.
I like all the gruesome details Lee includes. He made this horribly realistic and didn't hold back. He knows how to hook the reader (listener in this case) and keep them hooked.
His booming voice is amazing! It's sexy and rough, and he paces the reading perfectly. He knows when to be gentle and careful, and he knows when to apply a sense of urgency to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. Fantastic narration! One of the best I've heard!
My first Reacher novel, and it won't be my last! I loved it!
Good narration . I have an Audible library of 420 books & believe this is the first one I've listened to that was narrated by Dick Hill. This was a bit surprising; considering the quality of his oratory skills. His speech keeps you engaged; where I've had the unpleasant experience with some narrators ( of otherwise excellent books) who ruined the experience by putting you to sleep with their presentation.
Hard to say. It was a decent story, but a bit flat on character development. The plot is a bit too much cliché and far too predictable.
Not really; although I did finish it in a few days. (which is standard for me on longer books)
I purchased this with another one or two reacher books that were on sale. Considering that this was the lowest rated of the reacher books that I purchased; I'm hoping the others will be better developed. I was heitant to purchase this book due to its mediocre ratings; but it was the first in the series and I felt I might miss out on key character background information if I skipped it. After listening to it; I'm not so certain that was correct.
Lover of life and lover of books! I read/listen to a wide range (many) but my favorite non fiction are self-help and autobiographies.
Narration - outstanding - Made the book very entertaining.
The story line is good but very predictable and there are parts which are not believable as indicated by other reviewers but too often in these 'super hero' type stories many parts are not believable.
There was only one item that I didn't guess but I will not note it here to keep the surprise alive :D.
I anticipated a little more suspense and unpredictable items in the book.
I was really looking forward to starting the Reacher series, so I started book 1.Dick Hill did a fine job of narrating, unfortunately, what he had to work with was drivel.
I am so put off (ANNOYED) when people end their sentence by saying the word "REALLY?!" as if they mean something by it, other than asking me something.Well, Mr. Child used "REALLY?!" to end the sentences of his characters, oh, about 600 times throughout the 15+ hours of the story. People, I am not exaggerating! Every 3 to 4 sentences that came up. It completely ruined the story, and series for me.
Joe, the dead brother, he never once said, "REALLY?!"
I would have cut A LOT OF THOSE "REALLY?!" s out of the story!!!
Dick Hill did his best with what he had to work with.As always.
The story line is good but you should be prepared for some the most graphic violence I've listened to. If you are OK with that, go for it.
This book was so good couldn't put it down
Well planned and the story line was great
I like the way you added other people sounding as if they were on the phone
The burning the money
Can't wait to read the rest Of the 17 other book in the. Series!
I have been listening to books on tape for over 20 years. Starting with audio tapes, then CD's and now downloads.
When I was looking at he books I just finished it took me a while to remember what the book was about. I love a hero, like Jack Reacher, but was not over impressed with the overall story. There were some real exciting parts though.
I do think I would get another book from the same author. He was a good writer and I think he will improve with age. I did enjoy the movie and was hoping for the same type excitement, but I didn't feel like I got that. Also, I was interested with the idea of Jack Reacher being always looking out for chances to do good. He was not like that in this book.
He was competent but not great
I would see another Reacher movie.
