While I was looking for a new book I stumbled across this one and I remembered seeing the old movie, so I took a chance - and I am glad I did. I cannot say enough about how excellent both the story and the narration were - I was completely absorbed from the first sentence all the way through to the end. Set sometime in the 20th century, a lot of the content seemed quaint, yet nevertheless intense. The length of the book was just right for this story - about 6 hours. If you enjoy Sci-Fi you will not be disappointed. Following the book there is a discussion with the narrator that is very interesting as well - he is the son of the director of the first movie.

The narrator, who had an obvious flair for the material and for drama.
The long, weirdly relaxed, highly intellectual explanations of the science behind the invasion....especially when delivered by scientists who had themselves been replaced by pod people. I also LOVED the ending, which I never saw coming!!
Loved his voices, his vocal inflection and expressions. Disliked his very occasional tendency to over-emote at odd, non-nail-biting moments.
Oh, Audible! What a silly question for this particular title! Of course there have probably been MANY movies (I know of at least two), and although I'm not positive I've ever seen one, I sure would like to now that I've listened to the book! I'll bet the tag lines to the films were along the lines of "Terror in Mill Valley," "Who Can You Trust?," "They Came From Outer Space" and "Is it Mass Hysteria, or Something More Insidious?"
4 1/2 Stars for this surprisingly fresh page-turner! Thank you, Audible, for offering it on sale--hate to think how I nearly missed this hidden-in-plain-sight gem! I hadn't even known it was a book, and I'm not sure what I would have expected had I known, but not this!!
One important caveat: This book is DATED, being from the 1950's, not just in terms of the technological limitations of the times but in terms of gender roles. Go into it knowing that and you won't be disappointed. Expect some of what a modern audience would have called blatant sexism, and also a weird little joke about abortion that I don't even think I fully understood.
"Do not start this audiobook unless you have 6hrs free to sit and listen!" Excellent novel, superb reading by Mr. Tabori. Really cannot praise this audiobook highly enough.
I like these old-fashioned science fiction stories, and this was entertaining, but not repeatable. The main character didn't thrill me that much.
If you like this, try Day of the Triffids, and War of the Worlds, both even better than this one.
we were so pleasantly surprise be how good this book was, and the narator was great! I had seen the movie decades ago, but the book was so much better and creepier! My 10 year old son loved it as well.
An eerie tale of a small town where people start behaving slightly different then they used to. At first this is attributed to a mass delusion, but soon the real threat to humanity reveals itself...
A fascinating story written in 1955 about an alien invasion of a special kind. The plot is mostly dense and fast paced making it a thrilling listening experience.

I thought the story was great! Intriguing, suspenseful… and timeless! you wouldn’t necessarily conclude it was written in the 50s – it’s an ageless classic.
I had vague recollections of the movie, but it didn’t spoil the story because I couldn’t remember the end, then again, the movie and the book don’t have the same ending anyway!
A well written good old fashion story. Well read and keeps you interested from start to finish. If you like a horror story without blood and guts, this is it.
I am brutally honest. Popular, love everything they read, reviewers are scared to go neg. and risk their ranking. It's your money!!!
An excellent Sci-Fi Horror. It is amazing how scary a writer can get without gore, very little violence, no sex and no swearing. I am not a prude, I love sex and violence, just surprised, how much can be accomplished without these old stand-bys. I thought it was funny when the main character complained about the fast new society, with its new fangled inventions like dial phones. This is a masterpiece, don't let the time it was written hold you back. At least three movies have been made from this and they are good, but the book is also good. This has to be one of the more imaginative invasions every written.
Narrator is excellent.
I like to read and listen to Science, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Military, History, and Thillers.
Yes and no. I can't read as much as I like and resort to listening to books but either is doable.
This is a great classic and worth the money. The characters are fun and the villain is unique and interesting.
