My first Harry Bosch book. I ordered the next book as soon as I finished it. I definitely recommend it.
I have always loved Michael Connelly books! They are a bonus because they are so easy to go back and re-read and enjoy again. Any fan or new listener will enjoy listening to the first in the series.... Especially to get the first dose of Eleanor.
The story has so much mundane investigation detail it puts you to sleep. Moved forward with the pace of a snail. May develop, but watching the grass grow held more fascination.
I listen to and have recently started to write reviews. I've found the reviews have helped me to select books.
Bosch had talked with William Meadows about a year ago. He had told Bosch that he wanted to kick his heroin addiction. Meadows wanted to know if there were any good rehabilitation centers in California where he could go to get himself clean. Bosch gave him a few names and had not heard from Meadows since that time.
Bosch and Meadows had both been tunnel rats while in Vietnam together. Bosch felt fear and would be sweaty from head to toe when it was his turn to search a tunnel. However, Meadows thoroughly enjoyed going into the tunnels.
The police had received a 911 call, in the early morning hours, reporting a dead body in a pipe. The caller had been identified as being young. That fact helped Bosch to start his search. Directions were given by the caller and then he hung up. The call went out and Bosch went out to the crime scene.
The man had not been dead for long. The police also determined that the victim had been killed elsewhere. The body was pulled out of the tunnel and Bosch thought that his name was Meadows. He checked his body for a tattoo that Bosch could identify. Everything pointed to Michael Meadows but until the autopsy and finger prints were done there would be no positive identification.
What follows is an absolutely intriguing mystery. I enjoyed the first book, The Black Echo, by Michael Connelly. He definitely knows how to write an interesting mystery that wasn't easily figured out. There was a great plot and it did deal with a variety of character's. Dick Hill's narration was great. He used his magic to create definable character's and great emotional interpretations. The plot was well defined. I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys listening to mysteries. There is action and suspense throughout the book. I hope to purchase the second in the series, Black Ice, soon. Enjoy.
Michael Connelly is a phenomenal writer with an innate attention to detail which is second to none.

Harry's thoughts of Vietnam and how they played a part to the plot.
The author tied the story together quite well.
This book hooked me on Connelly and Harry Bosch...
