Reels you in during the first chapter then does not let you go. The protaganist is a genuine badass. The narration was also top notch.
I purchased Protect and Defend in July 2009. After enjoying it thoroughly the first time, I listened to it again in August 2010. It is just as great the second time around. A true classic if there ever was one!
I can see the movie production now…. “lights! Camera! …..What action???” I think it was over 7 hours in before good old Mich even got just a little violent. What the…. I mean come on Mich… Kick some butt why don’t ya. At least break somebody’s thumb or something! Definitely not as much action as other Mich Rapp books. Sorry Vince but I have to give this one two broken thumbs down.
It was a good story though. just not the Mich I’ve come to love reading about.
I happen to love the espionage/military thriller genre...and the more I listen to various authors, the more impressed I am with Vince Flynn. He's not flowery or overly stylish...but the guy knows how to spin a hell of a yarn. It doesn't hurt that he's established a great little cast of characters (starring, obviously, Mitch Rapp), but even though the general setting of each of the stories is roughly the same...Flynn finds a way of drawing you in, setting the stage, introducing a dilemma and bringing resolution. Just a great time!
And it should go without saying...but I never let the opportunity pass without acknowledging the contribution of George Guidall. He's very simply the best audio book reader I've ever heard. Much as with Walt Longmire, George IS the voice of Mitch Rapp.
I absolutely love every Vince Flynn novel that I have ever read. He is not afraid to look at our terrorist threat and put the blame where it belongs. No punches are pulled. No politically correct nonsense here. He is not afraid to call a spade a spade.
This is best enjoyed if you first read previous Flynn novels with the same characters, i.e., Rapp, Kennedy, etc. Your insight into their characters, what's happened before, will greatly help give this story more fire. It's a great read, recommended.
This is the 4th Flynn novel I have listened to. I can't get enough of this genre and Vince Flynn delivers every time. The action is nearly non-stop and the raw reality presented really makes you think that the story line could easily be pulled from tomorrow's headlines.
I've read a number of the "Mitch Rapp" books. The audio version of this one was well done. I will be listening to more in this series.
Another awesome Flynn novel. You have to stop yourself from time to time in his novels to remind yourself that no one can REALLY do all the things Mitch Rapp does, but the author sure makes it seem real enough! Great book. Can't wait for the next in the series.
