This was my first experience with author Vince Flynn and his hero Mitch Rapp. The book was fun, fast, refreshing blunt and filled with macho bravado and violence. It is centered on our current crisis with IRAN and offers some predictable yet solid insights for escapist fiction.
The only problem I have with Vince Flynn Books is that there just isn't enough of them. Come on Vince, Write faster.
Without a doubt my favorite author, 6 Stars is not enough!
I love espionage, legal, and detective thrillers but listen to most genres. Very frequent reviews. No plot spoilers! Please excuse my typos!
As this book opens Mitch Rapp finally gets the chance to kill traitor Stu Garrett. Two years after her death Rapp is still mourning the death of his wife Anna Rielly.
The heart of the book is about a dispute between the US and Iran. The major lesson learned is that kidnapping Rapp's mentor and CIA director Irene Kennedy is a big mistake.
Like all other Vince Flynn novels Protect and Defend is a complex story told with clarity that only Vince Flynn could achieve. It is an outstanding novel that is superbly narrated by George Guidall.
Another exciting story from my favorite author Vince Flynn. Don't know how I will live without him. I especially like how he humanizes some of the villains Once you start one of his books you really don't want to put it down. .
AMERICA...Military History, History, Action and the love of good believable thrillers.
This is just another great book in the Mitch Rapp series. It saddens me that a few more books and I'll be done with the series knowing no more books will be out.
Don't you just love a great story well told?
The hero is a typical action hero The cool of Bond with the strength of Stallone. He is as tough and as dependable as the Royal Canadian Mounties. Mitch Rapp is a "man's man" to be frightfully cliche. Mr. Flynn is not writing literature with their complex deep often flawed heroes, he is writing fun thrillers. That doesn't mean that his writing is NOT entertaining. So anything about that lead character Mitch Rapp should be judged by that standard making this series a success. Poe's "old soul" voice for the narration somehow works for our young but dark hero. Finally, excellent production, (i.e. little or no mouth sounds for those who fuss about such things solely in these reviews.) Pure escapist fun reading year round if you like to hear about "bad guys" getting their due.
I have read \ listened to many [most] of Flynn's
novels. But this one, while enjoyable, was a
little on autopilot.
The story opens where the last one left off, for
the most part, which I like, providing continuity.
Mitch Rapp is his usual macho self, but somehow
one dimensional in this novel- predictable, and
a little flat without a love interest.
Lots of action, a little suspense, and a little insightful
as far as the middle east is concerned. But some of
the foreign characters and their responses were
I will get his next book. But I hope it's better than
The story overview had me very interested in this book. The subject sounded interesting and timely. The actual book left me feeling let down. I really like an intriguing story that makes you think. One that opens your eyes to other perspectives. This book was, in my opinion, just another typical hollywood type story. Not terrible, but really falling short of what it could have been. Also, the main character was absurdly overdone as the untouchable "tough" guy.
I felt the story was missing substance. It was also short on character development and a very one-sided presentation of what could have been a very intriguing story.
On the upside, the reading was excellent - top notch. Would love to hear his reading of something better.
There is a great difference between what may make a great book, and what makes a great audiobook. Some of my favorite novels are things I would have a difficult time listening too. But some books, like Orson Scott Card, and Vince Flynn leap off the page when read well. The narrator gives darn near perfect inflection of how you want the characters to react. And the story itself lends itself for the way this is read - a quick pace as action occurs, a slower, more thoughtful pace as the decisions are being made. This story is fully realized in this format and absolutely is a standout. If you're someone who listens to audiobooks while you drive, watch out! This is one of those that is so engrossing, you may need to look down and check your speed at the more action oriented moments ;)
This book is great. This type of character can easily be overdone like Roger Moore in the 80's Bond flicks. Flynn is now my favorite author!
Mitch Rapp for President!
