Oh, the fun of this book! It's one of the first Georgette Heyer books I read and it's very funny. This audio book is lovely, it brings out aspects in the story I hadn't noticed before
The reason I gave the performance four stars and not five, is I found Clifford Norgate's rendering of Frederica and The Marquis, a bit odd and it took getting used to. Her voice was whispery and his was startlingly deep and pompous, not how I'd imagined. But don't let that put you off! It's truly a good reading and not to be missed for Heyer fans. It's a wonderful historical romance.
Loved the characters and the narrator was top notch. Heyers books start out slow, getting to know the characters, and always end on such a delightful note. She has great wrap up.
It's one of my favorite books to read but I felt the narration not as good as other Heyer audible. Not bad, precisely, but missing a lot of the sparkle and humor, particularly with the two main characters. I would so rather it had been Nicholas Rowe or Sian Phillips who both seemed to perfectly get the time and humor. Still a good listen.
I am so happy to have listened to this book as I laughed out loud and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! Thank you for such a wonderful presentation of a book I have loved since I was a girl. Even Ms. Heyer would have applauded the presentation!
This has become one of my favorites and have re-read it three times. Thus far, I think my favorite is the Grand Sophy, then Cotillion and Venetia. But right on their heels is Frederica. It's almost too close to call. I was a bit disappointed by Sylvester given all of the rave reviews, though I have listened to the ending numerous times because I liked the ending. I love her focus on independent women. I liked the conclusion of Sprig Muslin but got a bit tired of the antics of the young girl. If you like a little "silly" then it might work for you. The older independent female character was great. Thus far I have enjoyed all of her books, but these were my favorites. I generally can tell how much I like them by the way I want to listen to them again after a short while.
I have read and re-read Frederica over the years. This reader does not "do" young women very well, but overall it was enjoyable.
relax & multi-task, what luxury! I enjoy many hobbies, my ride to work, or doing chores much more when I have a good book in my ear.
Loved the Narrator. He nailed the children's voices! I listen to it over and over again.
