I enjoy counter-terrorism, westerns, historical fiction, detective mysteries, and old school comedy like "A Christmas Story".
Liked the historical aspects of European, religious, and Asian traditions. Also liked narrator's good separation of voices. I recommend. I'm now starting Tai-Pan.
Great novel, historically interesting and characterisation exciting and fantastic. Loved it! Hope you do too. Surprise ending is fantastic.
John Lee narrates this story with a degree of supreme mastery unparalleled in the audiobook world. He deserves an award for acting, no joke. The story is, of course, good, but the way the narration beings Dirk Struan's heroism to life is great beyond words. This is the audiobook I keep on my iPod and continuously go back to whenever I'm board with another or I'm looking for a pickup. It never fails to enthrall, and I get new things from it each time.
I had picked this book up in paperback years ago and have tried reading it two or three times, never making it past the first few chapters. So I decided to try it on audible. I had the same issue, I was starting too lose focus after the first hou or so. The first part is tough to get through because he is introducing many characters and going into explanations on most of them all the while giving some background info. It causes the first section of this saga to have very little flow, and feels like it is dragging on.
However, if you stick with it you will be rewarded this turns out to be a great novel. The first thought I had after finishing it was how long before I listen to it again. And I never listen to a book twice.
John Lee is amazing again. His various British accents are incredible (at least to my Canadian ears) and he is so well suited to these epic novels. I could (and did) listen to him for hours on end.
A swashbuckling adventure about the establishment of Hong Kong and the Struan company in the days of gun boat diplomacy and opium trading. Struan's is based on a true company by another name which had its tentacles throughout Asia.
James Clavell again produces a book not to be missed and with Shogun forms a loose beginning for his other Asian books.
John Lee is a great narrator too.
Say something about yourself!
Period books can be a little difficult for me, but this book is excellent. Of the saga, Tai Pan and The Noble House are by far the best - and a couple of the best I have ever read.
I just achieved App Scholar!! 1000 hours in 1 yr 7 mo and 10 days!!! I never thought I would make it this far!! Thanks Audible
I love John Lee he is with out a doubt the best NARRATER!!!!! Hands down!!!! For the book I give it a B+, the story is good but at times it's all over the place. I tried slowing the speed down to follow this book and it helped.. I usually listen at 2xx... I don't know if it was John Lee doing the women's voice or that's how fast they talk in Chinese? It was just hard to follow at times, but I took the meet out of the message!! Struin is a bad ass!! Tai-Pan to the core!! The book has a great ending, the only way Tai-Pan could go down is by natural deaster!!! Lol.... I know Colin will make his dad proud!! He leaves off with a BANG!!! This might be a book that you listen to twice, I think I will pick up more the second time around!!
