My preference for a good story is something totally unusual and not run of the mill stuff. Give me something I haven't heard before.
A very good listen by the man himself. Adventuress with good characters throughout the piece.
I read a handful of the review here before purchasing this book, One area that was not mentioned in many of them was the narrators use of accents and tonal pitches to give the feeling of multiple readers or actors in an "audio play". I really enjoyed this part, and will look into other reads by John Llyod. In one of the other reviews there were some comments about this being a book for dealing with the "environmental wackos and Global warming hoax" I have no clue where that person got that Idea...perhaps he is just pushing his own ignorant agenda...as this book never mentions global warming or any type of hoax.
Its a gripping adventure of modern day people being thrust into the 14th century, and the harsh differences that are present, some of the scenes are a little tough to swallow...but overall I really enjoyed it.
This story started out slow and uneasy. I almost stopped listening. Suddenly, there is a twist that grabbed my attention and kept it until the end. I would have rated it five stars had the ending been not as short.
If you are new to books or audiobooks, this is a good choice. I have no regrets...
I LOVED this book. I am huge fan of historical fiction and this was a wonderful combination of current science/technology/suspense with historical action. I had a hard time walking away from it and wanted to keep listening! The narrator did a great job, which is really important to me. I was fascinated by Crichton's statements about technology, as well as about our misperceptions about history and the Middle Ages. The discussion about risk and "educated guesses" in science was very well done. I enjoyed all the characters and the suspense involved in weaving the story. Highly recommend this book!!!
While listening to this book, I kept thinking this is like watching a child play with cardboard cutout dolls. The 2-dimensional characters are all alike (and none very like-able), the dialog is boring, contrived and predictable, as is the plot. Even the narrator was not that great; his accents are truly dreadful. Seriously, nothing took me by surprise. It was an obvious and boring story line from start to finish. Save your money for something entertaining.
I'm not the biggest fan of Crichton's work but have enjoyed some of it before. This book, however, is really low end. You'd seriously have to be a die-hard Crichton fan to enjoy it.
Mediocre story, sub-par reader. You could see most plot twists coming a mile away. The story line is very simplistic, the language was very common place, the characters very one dimensional. This was my first Crichten book, and this book gave me no reason to try another.
I found this book very long and boring. Everything that could go wrong to the characters, did, over and over and over again. I skimmed through the second half of the book and listened to the last chapter and I don't feel that I missed anything.
