Wow, what a book. Get past the f-bombs and you will get caught up in this sad and inspirational story. A precious read!
I love reading and I really love Audible. I'm a Grants Administrator at a university with a very long commute in everyday. Audible helps me pass the time and helps me enjoy my favorite pastime.
I couldn't finish this, so don't take my 2 stars that it's not a well written/well narrated book. I just can't finish it. The story is written in such graphic detail, I just couldn't handle it. Yes, I could handle the movie, but I can't finish the book.
It's dark subject matter, but you can tell Sapphire has enormous empathy and respect for the girls like Precious she has taught and through her eyes, the listener can't help being won over.
The narrator was excellent - she gave Precious one of the most memorable voices I have heard. In fact, I don't think the story would have been nearly as fluid had I read it instead of listening to it.
The story and tone reminded me a little of A Patch Of Blue (Elizabeth Kata).
THE BOOK WAS FULL OF STORIES OF TRUTH AND PASSION. FULL OF PAIN AND REGRETS. THE DIFFERENT STORIES FROM SO MANY DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS. I WAS ABLE TO RELATE TO SOME OF THEM. I THINK THIS SHOULD BE READ BY WOMEN ALL OVER THE WORLD.
SAHM in Indianapolis.
After having watched the movie years ago, I decided to listen to the book when it showed up on my recommended list. It was hard to listen to at times, because the content was so rough, but I enjoyed it overall. I'm not sure I would listen again, only because hearing those awful things people did to Precious was enough.
I love Bahni Turpin. I've listened to several of her recordings, and so far she has yet to disappoint.
Maybe her mom, just to knock her out.
The book was sad & at times horrifying. It's a glimpse into a completely different world then most of us even realize exists. It did leave me contemplating how our society offers no real solutions for a whole culture of people so I would say it was thought provoking and well read.
