There are two kinds opf audio books in my universe. One is the kind I have to LISTEN to and rewind if I miss something, etc. The kind I might read for actual knowledge of a subject matter or literature. This is the other kind; the kind I don't need to catch EVERY word of, although I try to catch every word These are "books to sit still and do hobbies with." This is the kind of book that is to me "music to clean by" - my house is spotless after a weekend with this book because I couldn't "put it down." It is easy to keep track of things despite my comings and goings, turning it off and on going from room to room and so on. The story was engaging and the narrator fabulous. If the story is engaging and easy to follow I frankly don't care what it is about, and despite not being much of a detective/mystery follower I delighted in this book. Ear candy for the sweet tooth so to speak. The characters are very well developed and it would be easy to imagine some of the characters themselves being the subject of their own "series spinoffs." And much applause to the narrator, a GREAT job making a fun book even more fun. All in all a great little "read" which will serve to make me a Hiaasen fan from now on.
Retired former magazine editor who is working harder than ever as Mr. Dad to his 11-year-old daughter.
Carl Hiaasen is knock-down funny and those who enjoy his brand of humor will not be disappointed with Double Whammy. The characters are great, the situations are hilariously unbelievable and the irreverence flows like honey. And George Wilson's narration is over the top. A great listen.
I loved "Skinny Dip", which led me to buy "Double Whammy". I was not disappointed. It is loaded with satire, all kinds of wacky characters, lots of action, lots of laughs. This is nothing you could take seriously, just good fun. Although the characters are totally off-the-wall, the protagonists are also likeable, which is important to me.
One day while listening to this book on my ipod at the gym I was laughing so hard i(it was during the "pitbull head as a braclet")someone asked my if I was okay. I nearly wet myself. I just loved the book. So funny! I have listened/read some real crappy mystery audiobooks and I was getting discouraged. I took a chance on this book. Well worth it!
This is only the second work by this author -- it won't be last. It is a pleasure to drive and be compelled to laugh out loud while still being challenged to think about important issues. I highly recommend this book.
Vintage Hiaasin. Funny with twisted characters. Great read and great listen. The narrator does a great job. I love how Hiaasin characters great their just desert.
I kept waiting for it to get better. I loved Skinny Dip and have read all kinds of great reviews and saw Carl Hiaasen interviewed on 60 minutes and thought oh great another fun book to listen to.... but not so... it started out ok but ..... I somehow finished it but.... I think if I had to do it over I would save my book credit for something else.
What a hilarious book. I really enjoy Carl Hiasson's books. They are always entertaining and always funny. This was my 5th book by this author and my 4th in Audio.. I'm working my way through all of Carl Hiasson's books. They are very entertaining, funny, and just a little disturbing. Everything you want in a book and more.
Don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Trip's cool though. Use Audible to make gym-training sane... And rip my imagination.
Is there a Florida culture? One that’s as different from everywhere else as maybe Mars’? Is this the place where paradigms smash up against one another crushing egos, dreams, and bodies? Odd thing about this story… it sort of doesn’t end… Well at some point the reader says, “The End”, so I guess Hiaason decided that was the point at which he felt like he wanted to stop pulling on this particular string. And you know what? I wanted him to keep on pulling. See Hiasson’s like dope. You start on the stuff he’s peddled to you and all at once the bag’s gone and you’ve got to go cold turkey. This weird, odd tale is totally macabre fun. It all works because you’re distracted by the noise of Florida paradigms FWUMPING.
George Wilson captures all of the zany mystery and cavorting creatures in a way that makes the impossible to believe as credible as the evening news. Hell… this might simply be Florida’s evening news.
Join Decker and Skink as they attempt to locate a killer in this tale of big time bass fishing, tele-evangalism, and real estate scams. Dark yet funny book and in my opinion one of Hiaasen's best. I did find the narrator's attempt at different voices, especially woman's, a little annoying at first but I soon got over it and just enjoyed the story.
